Darkest hour
Enjoyed this very much, although I am, as a rule, more into black and death metal and those awesome guitar solos that just take you over. The blend of rhythm, bass and lead guitar though all mixed well though. Not difficult to tell that all musicians involved have multitudes of talent, in their own right. Think it's great that all musicians were able to showcase what they had in this song. So many times you hear bands where one instrument is overpowered by another. Guess that's the whole concept of Melodic Metal. Vocals were okay too Steve, although I don't believe this song suited your range as well as it should have perhaps. Know you have more depth in your vocal repertoire than what this song allows. Hope that comes across as a constructive comment, as that is what is meant by it, nothing else. Anyhow, hope you're able to reform at some stage. Take care.
I have always liked my dark music! This is top stuff, the kinda tune you should listen to when your lifes going down the pan!rated
Great guitar. Awesome sound. Eerie sounding - very appropiate for the song. I enjoyed the entire song. Rated.
I must have missed this the last time I visited your page. My favourite part is actually the instrumental break in the middle of the song, and then the build up afterwards is also very well put together.
This kicks. Listen to this twice in a row. Could listen all day. Rated! \m/o_O\m/
The length of this track is not self indulgent, its fantastic and none of it should be missed. I am just at the guitar solo around 7 mins, wow Kaesmel
Back for another listen to the original of your track and it's just totally classic metal, the kind that's getting more attention these days. But you still mix something a bit more up to date with your sound that's, like I've said before, totally you.
For those checking this song out, I appreciate it, because it's an awesome song and you MUST listen to it!! Really like this guys! :D
Big Congratulations #12 on the Charts! Way to Go! :) And...for Andy's rendition of this to hit #1 Congrats! :)
this is a great track - love the intro. Each section of the song is class. Would really love to hear this live. Great harmonies going on too. And a wicked guitar solo. Awesome - Rated and nominated...Martin
Excellent track!...Beautiful playing on the intro here. Kick ass band, and very nice bass playing/sound too. This is just an excellent arrangement! Just listened to Andy F's classical version of this. Now i know why you wanted to do a classical take on it. Great music, is great music in any form. Metal or classical, it stands up! Heres my rating! Loved it:) Mark
Still class...wanted to remind me of the sounds..just for a personal comparison of the AndyF mix. Hope ur well gents, peace. Acro.
Just finished going back and forth, back and forth from this track to Andy's interpretation of this track! Bravo to both versions! "Darkest Hour sees the light!" -rated- :) Carol Sue
really cool like them all rated each jo
took a download as well ;)
Hey man, just visiting this since it was on Steve's signup thread. Can't wait to read the review, because I think it's gonna be a great one ;). The length of this may be long, but interesting how played all this out for so long. It gives it that epic feel because it's so long and the guitars are awesome. Some sweet melodies. The beginning of this track, sounds like a progression I'd make lol, and also the perfect 4ths to major 3rds is something I do a whole lot in my music lol. Anyways, this comment is supposed to be about you guys lol. Well, you never disappoint me dude. Loving this track. Just ended (was listening while typing). Anyways, a long track deserves a long comment. Sooner or later I'll do a sign-up thread again. I could go more into detail, but I'll save it, just in case ;). Awesome track guys. You guys rock!! Rated!
AS slippy i will be writing as the song plays. Nice opening the lead guitar is very nice. Handled so well. Love the melody of your tracks. The 4 of you work really really well together. 2.16 when the heavy guitar riff settles in... really carries the song nicley. A song like this really does need to be this long. Its one of those songs that no matter how many times you listen to it, it just wouldnt get boring. like the break down around 3.10 the guitar and drums working so well together. Just hit the solo and its beautifull. Solid track here guys. Top stuff, rate.
Took me long enough to get here!!!! Ok ok I'm here now .. As this plays in my ears I'll write as I go.. Pull up a chair .. Cool opening .. A tinge of Skynard in there. And Awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay we go .. Love the harmony stuff ... Oooh . a tad of System of a Down in there .. I can hear so many influences in there and I'm NOT gonna list em ;) Coooooooooooooool solo .. Now THAT is a good 8 minutes well spent .. Beautifully epic. Raaaaaaaaaaawk factor 10 !!!!! Excellent
Hey guys! This is killer! All your tracks actually are great... I don't listen to much metal anymore but this is real melodic and enjoyable... good stuff... on a side note... I have a cool newscaster sample that says... "today is our darkest hour" you're welcome to it Mark
i was sure i'd already commented here....a long track but 8 minutes well spent. really good allround. rated!
Class stuff lads. self-indulgence not. There's nothing wrong with a good intro. It builds tension right? Great track and totally rated.
hitting 6 minutes now, and my god, how dare you say "self-indulgent"??? you're indulging the rest of us, this is incredible
wow, this solo is beautiful, and i've only heard an 8th of the song. got to the vocals now, and they're excellent. i've neever listened to 3 mins already !! madness
An epic trak and as Andy said..def worth its wait in gold. I can hear the pain throughout this beauty..the guitar solo is real ....in good fellas..I can hear Metallica in there too man! The changes throughout this track are amazing..I really love the arrangement. The track feels real raw in the way it sounds...quality. I tell you what too man...I can def hear SOAD influence in there..painful and heavy guitar with beautifully painful harmonic vocals. This track really is a touch of class, the length is never an issue here because everything for this track is in place..never gets tedious or boring. A blinder of a piece gents..blinder. p e a c e.
I like this a lot, have to say it does remind me of the old days, progressive rock eh.. tee hee.... oh dear here I go!(Hankering after lost youith) it is good to see you guys producing well thought out and concieved music well played. Nice one guys.
Great piece this one - I can hear all manner of influences from Floyd to Boston to UFO. It's individual and original and as Andy says the 8 mins goes by because it keeps moving and has loads of versatility. Good luck. Rgds. Mike.
guitar work is spot on. you guys must have some really fun jam sessions together. im still waiting for our collab so i can get in on this ditheramb excitement. great track...voted and nominated!
nice intro section. guitars are well played. As i am not into this genre, but the guitars are nicely played all right. I do like the melodic side. I wonder how long it took to complete this at this length.
A very talented band, for sure; great sound on that guitar solo btw, mmmmm....so nice!
WOW! What can I say ? A pure gold track, excellent instrumental and clever variaition. Not a genre I feel qualified to comment on but I know what I like and I LIKE this!8 mins just flew by...lolGreat work guys well done.. Andy
Great stuff again from you guy's, like mancini, I have an ever expanding collection of your mp3's and other favs on this site (mancini included)even though your stuff is miles away from what I do, like most on here we listen to a rang of music, not just what we churn out...love the guitar stuff (as I glance at my epiphone SG !!!) keep em' coming guy's. Regards: Fatal X 8 ~ Aka ~ Destri
Wow, awesome track, and not long enough in my opinion. Lovely intro, reminded me a bit of Like a Hurricane, The Missions cover version. Some lovely segments of music throughout the track, and great guitar work. Good vocals again from Steve, all in all an excellent epic metal track. Quality again shining through. ONAGER
still can't get over the instrumental part just loved it!!!! another great track although long but was worth listening to!!!
tasty solo with the pick sweeps quality stuff

More to Come...
Darkest Hour is a bizarrely structured song. I found it difficult to distinguish between verse, chorus, middle eight, bridge, intermissions and such like. However, the changes in timing, feel and dynamic did keep the track very interesting although at times they do sound a bit disjointed. The fact that there was not an openly recognisable chorus detracted slightly from my enjoyment of the pi
The title of this track (3 away) reminds me (and not many people will know this) that our word “trivia” originates from the Latin meaning the meeting of three ways (tri via) or crossroads, which was, supposedly a place where people gathered to chat about nothing in particular. Having said that, the song in question is about a subject that is anything but trivial although doubtless those a
Well now, this just makes me wanna be in a band again! I used to listen to a lot of metal so I feel I'm qualified enough to say just how great this is. To me, this track takes the best parts of metal (high energy performances, hard-hitting riffs) and mixes it with melodic beauty in both the vocal and guitar performances and even the roughness of grunge. Quite a lethal mixture! For me, something st
Since I came across this Australian band when I reviewed In My Shadow (October 2005), they have seldom been off my radar. Part of that allure has to be down to my own liking for the band's rock credentials and their particular slant on what the term 'metal' should mean. Part of that is down to a personal friendship with Steve Kinghorn (the most visible member of the band). The ot
Steve from Ditheramb seems to be the chief cook and bottlewasher of this group of talent and it is him that I have got to know as a musician of some quality. We first crossed swords when he asked me to put their track Darkest Hour to Classical music. I have to say at this point I am not a lover of most heavy metal but there are exceptions and what I have heard from this lot certainly changes my min
Ditheramb - Euphoria Moody metal is what we're dealing with here and it's obvious from the start that these guys know their stuff. Not only that, they're melodically commercial enough to stand a real chance on actually making it into the larger arena. If I can get a gripe out of the way before I carry on, though, the vocals are generally way too quiet to suit such a powerfully played song, eve
Okey dokey, lets get started..... My first admission is that I know about as much about metal as I do about 3rd Century Mongolia.......in other words, not alot! So when Steve from Ditheramb replied to my offer of a review I was, well, wary..... but this is a really class track. Track Structure (9/10) I'm the first to admit I dont know what the perfect Metal 'Track Stru
Hello everyone again!! This is my third time reviewing the 4 man band, Ditheramb (which to me gives the sound of a REAL bad lisp of saying, “Dice a lamb”). If you haven’t heard of this amazing epic rock band you should be aware that they consist of the following: Jack Greenhill, playing the bass guitar, Glenn Townsend, hitting the drums, Steve Kinghorn, as the lead sing
This song is an epic metal song that has different personalities. I hear a mellow hint of Pink Floyd and a mixture of Sabbath, Priest... This all blends into a metal song that speaks of letting go, death, in my analysis. The song structure is smooth to frantic and back again and on to the climax. This schizophrenic mixture seems to work and I liked the structure. This song
The Kinghorn brothers (Steve and Scott), Jack Greenhill and Glenn Townsend collectively known as Ditheramb have - in the space of a year - carved themselves out quite a reputation for fiery, rock based tracks and have a lot of credibility from this reviewer. I got some cute metal ears after having spent many years getting blown from wall to wall by this heavy metal band or that one.&nb;
Hey again to everybody. This time around I’m going to be delving into some metal.
The name of the group is Ditheramb, and I’m going to cover a tune titled “In My Shadow”.
Ditheramb - Crushed to Dust
Hello once again everybody! Ah, what do we have here today? Oh sweet, it’s Ditheramb once again! This is my third time reviewing the 4-man rock band. For those first hearing of Ditheramb, the members consist of: Jack Greenhill, playing the bass guitar, Glenn Townsend, hitting the drums, Steve Kinghorn, as the lead singer who plays the guitar, and last but no
MP3 Unsigned is a site that hosts many fine artists, covering just about every genre known to man. I have spent almost two years reviewing those artists by now and I think I have a pretty good grip on who does what. Out of all those musicians though, there aren't that many that make music that is - in any meaningful way - different. Sure the site has it's share of musical oddball
Wow I feel like I’ve been generous with ratings so far, but I guess the songs I’ve listened for reviewing just caught my attention real quick and made me real happy with the result. Anyways, this is the second time I’ve reviewed the 4-man band, Ditheramb, who I can introduce to you: Jack Greenhill, playing the bass guitar, Glenn Townsend, hitting the drums, Steve Ki
Brisbane, Australia's Ditheramb (consisting of Steve and Scott Kinghorn,Jack Greenhill and Glenn Townsend btw) impressed me enormously from the first track I reviewed, In My Shadow (October 2005). Their blend of styles and arranging skills helped because I haven't been known to be into metal since I got rid of me acne by chopping off my head. No, wait a minute. That can't be righ
Stained with power and performance. I’m back. This is my second review on here and this is a far more familiar sound and ground for me. I’ve loved rock music since 1994, I was 12, and I’ve continued a massive interest ever since! I’ve never been very unconventional in my tastes, my favourite band was always Metallica as well as loving korn, slipknot, roses and a bit of biscui
Now Ditheramb hail from Austalia which is good as two of my favourite artists of all time are from there, Midnight Oil, and INXS. So thats a good start :o) For a metal track this starts quietly with some nice guitar leading into Steves' excellent vocals, which are joined by the drums, and then lead onto a crescendo of the group kicking in. This gives way again to the more subtle music
This is quite a cool song, but as an objective listener, I become and objective reviewer, but don't get worried...lol first off, the recording needs some help, leaves a little to be desired, I can't really hear what the guitar is doing until it get's a little more excitable, but overall, it clips in spots, and is a bit muddy, but I'll get off my engineers stool and get to the song itself.
Well this is the 3rd review I have done for ditheramb, I was a fan after doing the first review and after the 2nd I was man why aint this band in my cd collection. Now we are on the 3rd review, and does my opinion change? The answer is nope. Main reason, Steve has just uploaded another bunch of quality tracks. So guess who, has a mini ditheramb album? Yup that wasn’t hard me of course. It’s not
Alright guys! See? I told you I was going to do more reviews, not that you were doubting me or anything, lol. Anyways, back on task!
This is gonna be a straight forwards review no silliness honest J From the start to the end all 30 or 40 seconds ;) only joking. of this track screams western, Pistols @ dawn and all that, I reviewed this band on my last set of reviews And pretty much thought yup these guys are going places, and I am still standing by this. Again I can hear influences but im not gonna harp on about that. its pla
So we are back on course, or are we?……..this reviewing game is a piece of cake ;) It is now anyway, and im about to have a massive slice of this cake. Here goes this is going to be fun As soon as this bad boy fires up, it’s back to my roots, roots been my music preferences. The question here is, which musical influences, smack my head around the most, with this monster of a track?
The major problem with reviewing so many tracks a month is that you quickly forget just why you gushed buckets over this track but not over that one... Take Ditheramb for example. This Brisbane, Australian four peice heavy rock band got inundated with praise when I reviewed In My Shadow (October 2005) and for the life of me I couldn't remember the track at all when I came to write this
Allow me to make myself extremly clear. A rating above a 7 means i think it is ready for radio. i see a 7 as an average professional track by a professional artist. While its hot on my mind, there is a breakdown where an almost magical guitar sound comes in before a huge hit and the music verse comes back in. Make sure you peeps reading this check out this magic riff, i shall re
I could have sworn I had reviewed this metal outfit from Brisbane (from the land Down Under) but having exhausted all my search facilities I've come up a complete blank. I have a suspicion it disappeared into a black hole after my last computer crash. And they said it would make life easier, eh? Yeaaahhh, right. Hear that whooshing sound?, that's the wind flapping in the pi
In My Shadow by Ditheramb Hello! Tedd-Z again! Aaah... good old rock! Haven't reviewed rock in a long time, so I had to adjust a little! Makes a nice change from electronic music, tho! First impressions... it sounds good! Everything's clear, claritable and has its own space, so the production work is very good! Arrangement is fine aswell! Not too stop-start, not dragged too much! Performance is
Wow, you said outside my genre, and you were right. But i am a music lover 1st and foremost. and my 1st impression is wow. This is a great track, but first things first, the instrumental. Melodic metal is the correct phrase to describe this!! Excellent changes of pace in places and i have to say i really enjoyed the way you swapped from quiet, haunting melodies to heavy, distorted leads. The intro
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Metal genre, since it was the music I grew up on as a kid. Ditheramb is a melodic metal band from Australia, and they have asked for a review on the tune “ Crushed to Dust”.
Ditheramb For those who don't know I am an avid listener of new music and half of the duo Serenity here at mp3unsigned.com. As many of you know I'm not a great rock/metal fan preferring chill out and more commercial rnb/dance/pop tunes. So it takes a pretty decent track for me to think otherwise. I have my favourites that constantly surprise me, however
AN MP3 Unsigned artist I hadn't heard anything about until I picked up on a forum conversation, Ditheramb is a 4 piece outfit from Brisbane in Australia - and we'd better not hold that against them eh? The band consists of brothers (?) Steve Kinghorn (gtr/vocals) and Scott Kinghorn (gtr/backing vocals), Glenn Townsend (drums) and Jack Greenhill (bass). Formed in 2003, it appears they s
‘Crushed To Dust’ – a few wordies from Spyda I was asked to add ‘Crushed To Dust’ to my Feb 5 review thread on behalf of Ditheramb, because being based in Australia & due to the difference in time zones they miss out on review threads here on MP3Unsigned. So here goes. Before I joined MP3Unsigned in April 2004 I would never ever have given the rock & metal genres a
I listened to this a while back a couple of times then left it alone to have a think about it. A few more listens. Ok what passed my hallowed aural portals? I like this composition. The dynamics of the song are very well worked out and really give the song a great listening edge. From the vocal to the instrumentation it's as tight as a badgers ass.
Slow start but gradually built into a superb deep guitar bliss of madness and lost soulfull voice tones, this band from Brisbane Australia shows a lot of great quality for the metal/heavy rock community. The bridge work is great in this, with a moderate break halfway through the song, it didn't drown out the purpose of the song, to take you on a heavy adventure into the unknown.
