There is a Bowie feel to Asylum, maybe from the Low period but there is much more as well. Love the production, enjoyed the song. Thumbs, Gibbo
Great production and performance James. Interesting lyrics as well. Reminds me of 70s Bowie a bit which is definitely a compliment. Enjoyed this. Thumbs. Roger
Wow! what can I say? Apart from the great lyrics and instrumentation(esp guitar solo and drums), I love the warm vinyl feel of this track. Prog Rock magazine give away a cover CD each month, You should send in this track and see what happens. Much rated.
Loved that low bass rise (some subs kicking in?) at the start...haunting stuff in this maniacal musical treatise. Phantom-esque...getting into Rock Operas James? Worthy enterprise for your considerable skills :) Some of your best vocal chops on display, I think. Time well-invested, giving this one a bit of extra attention. Enjoyed!
Very amazing Prog-Rock James, I love the whole vibe here, this is masterful, and could have come from an Eloy or Nektar album form the 70's easily! Cheers, Andrew
Very cool intro. Woosh and I'm in a surreal experience. Vocals are haunting and lyrics provoke thoughts probably too deep for most to appreciate. The arrangement is unpredictable and leaves the listener uneasy. Technically top quality, as usual. Love your selection of diverse sounds, adding to the mood.
reminds me of early Genesis it took me awhile to wrap myself around it but love it on the way there and reaching there or not getting there anyway thumbs ! cheers !
God i Love This. Great Haunting Vocals. Sounds lot like a Queen Track. Brilliant.
Hi James, Just wanted to say a big well done to you on making No.6 with this track. It's quite a chilling track but you've captured the mood incredibly well and your performance on this is simply superb. Well done. I've voted. PJ
I like your approach to your songs, they all seem like they come from a musical - not a glossy one but one which films covertly behind closed doors in dusty rooms holding outcasts with stories to tell... if you get my drift. This is no exception it's very moody and visual and very worthy of attention.
Creepy atmosphere. Interesting chords. Like something from "The Lamb lies down on Broadway", sorry about the Genesis reference, but back then they were real good (before Ohil Collins took over, bah). I like it.
cool opening. creative track, it reachs for something different. nice the way you set up the chorus. I liked it
It certainely has the theatrical feel Andy, as you always like to preserve and why not when it's this good!! Magnificant songwriting and production! Your vocals are presented beautifully with those great lyrics!! Loving the synth work and FX effects, fitting like a glove for me!!! I wish I could play geetar at all and 100th the quality you do would be a dream!! Sublime production altogether my Friend!!!
Cheers Craig - BODF is one of my all-time favourites. Sounds like I'll have to investigate Freak-out song. It may prove difficult.
There was a 1969 album called 'Freak Out Song', not sure if it came before or after 'Pretties for you' but definitely before 'easy action'. Some lists of his albums don't even mention it so it might be pretty rare. Anyway my brother had it and it was very pysachadelic, seriously f*cked up stuff. Made Arthur Brown sound like Justin Bieber. This isn't that far out there but the title and lyrics and the general vibe just kind of remind me of it a bit. There's a later song on 'love it to death called 'ballad of dwight fry' which has a similar theme, about a patient in an asylum which is one of my favourite songs ever, absolute classic.
Funny how a new synth, new voice or f/x leads to something and our job is to follow where it takes us. Sounds like you got a strange vibe from the moog and followed the trail to an...ASYLUM. Freaky tune, different structure...experimental fringes...LOVE IT! Bizarre chords, bizarre guit riffs, bizarrro world...all fit this one so well! Thumbs!
Craig - ta for the observations - I originally had it in avant garde then I was persuaded to put it elsewhere. Early Cooper - pretties for you/easy action - or maybe later like killer/love it to death?
Well this is very different - but I like it very much - voted C;)
This reminds of very early Alice Cooper, it's the sort of sounds I imagine going on inside the heads of lobotomised apes. That said I actually quite like it! On second listen now, I'm thinking this is probably best categorized as either avant garde or prog rock. Rated, Craig.
Got round to this again. Now that I'm a little more sober it ... er... gets no better! No, seriously, it's good work mate. It has no comparisons in the current music marketplace, which I think is a good thing. I love that weird guitar stuff going on. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway, that snare is flaccid. Get some snap into it man! I would double track that 'asylum' bit, sounds like you're a bit restrained there. Bellow it out a bit. Just thinkin about comparisons, I'm getting a King Crimson and Soft Machine feel, or even Captain Beefheart. Rated. Gerrit fixed!
Imaginitive work Andy. Lyrics very thought provoking and the sound Fx are terrific. Well sung too. Take Care Andy :)
Thought provoking material. Obviously music as an art form. The whole feel captures the spirit of the subject matter. Very professional sound. Love Wednesday x
I was thinking spooky but then I read Erik's post and I think I agree! Something about the way "mentally unbalanced" sounds seems right on target Andy! I love the sound effects and the vocal has an edgy, maybe mentally unbalanced feel! Fine composition and muscianship as usual! Crazy rater!
Very cool, mentally off-balance lyrics as well as music. The vocals are portrayed poignantly. I like the sound effects you use - it definitely adds a twisted feel to this track.
This one takes a few listens but its growing on us now. Got some great piano chords in there that we always find interesting and the Moog is lovely and weird, adding to the sinister feel of this track. Guitar sound to suit in the solo works well. Must of been hard to sing the vocal track but you pulled it off and the mix is great-as expected! Congrats Grandpa Dude and don´t scare the baby with this...
Hi there, Andy~ Thought I would peek in on you here,lol... (peek) :-O and I am hearing an amazing track from you, wow~ If this were in the right hands, it would probably get a movie built around it. An awesome, creative, interesting, well produced epic track. (whew, I'm out of breathe, hehe:)=Bravo= :)
Nice description Dan lol
Nothing like going off the beaten path. You not only went off, you seem to be slashing though the forest with a machete at times. The new path may not be used a lot, but it will be a preferred route for the masochistic and deranged.....how's that for a review? I actually really like it Andy, guess that says something about me....8 : ).
Wow, this is different for you! Love it a lot man. It's strange and compelling. It progresses with an odd musicality sometime goes a tad off the road but that sounds intentional and is effective non the less but more, more, more!
Liking the slightly unpredictable progressions, helps to give it an unsettling vibe. Love the distorted ''fingernails scratching the blackboard'' type sound lol. Cool ivories too dude. Also like the slight dissonance in places. Second listen...yepp...me likey.
Eerie. THIS one needs to be in a movie ... I think listening to this one is giving me a contact buzz. I can't say as this is one of my favorites from you hon, but it gets my rate for extreme creativity.
Andy, this has an abstract dissasociative feel so I understand the whole Floyd/Barret comparison. No matter what your inspiration it doesn't change the fact that this is still a rockin' cool tune! I enjoyed it! Nice mix as always!
Vocally not for me but I accept You have not been around this one so much so fair play. Musically very interested however and perhaps it would stand alone as an instrumental? Not bad anyhow for a Grandad - congrats by the way pal Ant
Great Track Gramps! Congrats :). My lord you hit some really sweet vocal notes on this track, no comparisons from me, this is a rather wonderful piece to knock up in a couple of hours. Very complex and beautifully presented. I gotta say one of your finest.
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather. Nice to hear a new track from you. Dark and dramatic - reminded me of early Kate Bush - not the vocals obviously - the instrumentation particularly. I wouldnt say this is avant garde though - it takes a couple of listens to get into it but there is much to be appreciated and admired - nice detail in the production which as always is pure class. Excellent guitar solo and i like how the track opens and closes - also like the swooshing and screeching fx that can be heard throughout. Interesting and inventive stuff. Thumbs. James
A little too easy at times to identify with the sad lot of those incarcerated for losing their wits...thanks for scaring the crap outta me and wondering where I left my car keys...Well done! I like those drums, that is the yamaha I'm hearing, isn't it? Good lyrics/vocals, and keyboard and guitars sound appropriate for this, couldn't help but think while listening a faster tempo might spare you the truckload of comparisons to Pink Floyd you're gonna get...Congrats on the grandbrat! That's excellent news! Thumbs up on that as well as this song....:)
Hmmmm.... I may have to revisit this one. Did nowt for me on first listen. I'm gonna call you Syd from now on (Syd)
I began recording songs in January 2006. Genre is rock, pop and jazz with electronica dabbles on a few toons. It's a hobby for me. I record using cubase.
Home studio using a PC, yamaha keyboard, a couple of guitars and a Rode NT1A mic. I use cubase for recording/mixing and wavelab for mastering.
A strange fact - in 1976, the term "Mega" was 1st coined by me and came into general usage as meaning something great or awesome. I was an apprentice electrician at the time and "mega" was a technical prefix meaning "a million times". I remember that all my fellow students started using the term so maybe this was down to me. Nobody hardly says it anymore so i guess it's run it's course.
Another strange fact - i designed a telephone for use in a mortuary. Dead interesting lol!!!
Nice strong melody & energy to this track, would be great for the movies.
wow i felt like i was actually at a pink floyd concert excellent tune.
James Oakwood is a new name to me from MP3 Unsigned but hey, he is a man in love with his bed obviously so he's cool by me. He's also a rock artist which, as you well know, definitely fine by me. According to his webpage, he's only been writing and recording since 2006 and features a tasty pick of all his kit (is that a Dell?); the kind of stuff you need to make rock music. Even
Wooohooo!
A refreshing track about my fave place, I love it!
Keep em comming Mr Oakwood!!
