Welcome to the site!

We have a friendly community of artists here who will give you good feedback on your music.  You'll find that you'll get more comments by following some simple guidelines when posting a topic in New MP3s:

  • The most important thing to remember is to post a link to your music.  If people can't find you then we can't listen to you.  Posting a link is simple.  See below for more detailed advice.
  • Like anything else in life, its not all take.  You'll get more comments on your music if you give comments on others'.  Check out the other topics in New MPs.
  • For your first post, why not introduce yourself?  Say a little bit about your music if you like, such as the style it's in and how long you've been making it.  This will help you attract fans of your style.
  • If you have a track that isn't quite finished, or you think could be improved upon but you're not sure how, you might want to try posting a link in our new Work In Progress forum instead.
  • We'd prefer it if you link to music on THIS site only please.  Its free to join and upload your music so why not?
  • Please remember to correctly tag your mp3s if you are offering them for download.  This will make it easier for listeners to find your music amongst their mp3 collection.  See below for more info.
  • Lastly, please only upload mp3 files.  MP3 is a universally recognised format that everyone can play.  Other types of files such as wma, m4a, and mp4 might not play at all, and thats no good, is it?

Adding a link to your song

There are a few different ways of doing this:

First, copy the URL for your track.  Its in the address bar of your browser when its on your song page.  You can also find it beside your song in the Add/Edit your MP3s menu in your ARTIST MENU.  Then...

Either

Paste it straight into the dialog box.  It should become an active link automatically, like this: http://www.mp3unsigned.com

Or

To look a little fancier, type the song name and highlight it.  Use the Insert Hyperlink button in the dialog box to add the URL into the little box that appears.  The active link should appear straight away, like
this.

Or

Simply type [*url]paste your link here[/url] without the * and your link will appear in your submitted post.

Tagging your mp3s

Tags contain data such artist name, track title and style as well as some other fields.  You will need a special program like Mp3tag to do this.  Don't worry it's free to
download and easy to use.  Once tagged, your track and artist name etc will be displayed on any mp3 player it is played on.  You could even leave your website or email address in the comments field.  Who knows where your mp3s might end up?

Ratings, Nominations and Charts

You might notice that there are 3 seperate charts on mp3unsigned; The Official Top 20 Chart, the User Voted Chart and the All Time Classics ChartHere's how they work:

Beneath each track is a row of buttons, one of which [Rate Track] allows you add to that tracks rating if you enjoyed listening to it.  This lets the artist know that you liked the track and the rating then gets added to the rating count for that track.  The more ratings a track has, the higher it will get in the User Chart.  To keep the User Chart fresh, the top tracks will be moved each week to the Classics Chart.

The Official Chart is compiled each week from tracks that have been nominated by VIP members.  Every VIP has a limited number of nominations and the trend is to nominate tracks out of the latest weeks releases.  Nominations are reset each Sunday evening UK time after that weeks chart is announced.

If you'd like to nominate tracks yourself, you'll need to sign up as a VIP memberFollow the link to see the other benefits VIPs get.

What not to do

If you post a topic and still get no comments on your track please DO NOT keep posting the same topic to the same track again and again.  This is called 'spamming' and we don't like it.  Instead, try to attract more people to your thread.  See GreyB's post below for some helpful hints.

Be warned...Multiple posts will all be deleted without warning.  Repeat offenders will be removed.  Be aware that posting in other peoples' topics with links to your track could also be regarded as spamming.  It won't make you many friends either.

Its considered bad practice to announce to another member that you have nominated them, either by posting in their thread, comments box or via pm.  If you do like someones track, by all means tell them, but leave the fact you nominated them out of it.  Nominations are secret ballots.  Don't promise nominations in exchange for a nomination back.  You'll never be able to tell who has nominated you or not anyway.

Ways to get more listeners

Definate words of wisdom there, from the big eye thing.

Also if i may add a point,

Don't take offence if someone dosen't comment on your track, that you think has commented on everyone elses track but yours, sometimes people are just not into that particular genre and can't think of anything to put down.

I would have to say I've been here over a year now and have made many internet friends and participated in various projects.

Don't get discouraged if no one replies to a posting right away as there are so many artists and songs that it might take awhile if you choose not to take part in the threads.

I agree with all that has been said but just remember getting involved and participating will be very helpful if you are new to the site.

One thing that irritates me though is bad manners.  If you do decide to upload a song and ask for assistance or for fellow artist to comment, PLEASE use manners. I've seen so many postings that look like this:

"Hey, Listen to my music and give good comments man."  Followed by a second comment.

"hey, where is everyone, I want a review so where is everyone?"

For starters, I wouldn't touch that with a fifty foot pole.  There is no "please", "I would appreciate", "thank you", kiss my ass nothing.   If you want respect, then it should be a two way street.

I don't think there is one person on this site who would disagree with me when I say good manners and respect for the rest of the artist is at hand.

  1. No one HAS to do anything. Therefore if you demand a reaction you might get a negative one using that attitude or tone.
  2. I don't see any nice words even if the music is good. I might listen but I wouldn't give you the satisfaction of responding.  I might even just say,,,"next"
  3. If you "ask" for advice or a comment on your material, just remember it was you who asked so if some comments are not to your likings (but not offensive though), then learn from it or maybe even ask "how could I improve".  That would get you far ahead of the game instead of putting the site down or other artists.  If you ask for the truth, then you will get a fair response but remember not everyone will respond the same.  Some might respond by saying, "hey man, that's cool", or others might even say,,,"that mix doesn't do it for me", "the vocals need some work", production is good but I'm not fussy on the instrumentation.  The general idea is to get a response to correct or enhance your composition.
  4. Overall, enjoy the site, the friends, the music and use this site as an opportunity of developing, exploring, learning and making friends.  It's to your advantage so make good use of it.

Further more, Hi all, my name is Mary and I would like to welcome all newbies to the site.  Have a look around the site and enjoy the music WELCOME!

If I would give you a star for each time you made me smile, the world would be a brighter place...

I feel a group hug coming on...seriously the advice is great. I totally agree about good manners and I didn't even know about MP3 tagging so I've learned something important. By the way I've been browsing the site today and found a great band called The Brent Flood if guitar indie's your bag (as it is mine).
