Marie Kirby was born in Taplow, Maidenhead. As she was growing up she found many ways of grabbing the limelight, from tap dancing to talent shows or just singing from the top of her lungs round the house, much to the annoyance of her parents! She grew up with her Mum, Dad and brother Paul, in Ascot, Berkshire.
Marie went through school bored, desperate to get out there and perform but did not know how to get started. “I knew I had performing in my blood and I wanted to sing”, she explains, “but I didn’t have a clue on where to go or who to speak to”. A dancer friend at school introduced her to an industry paper, ‘The Stage’, and through that is where she met her current producers Red 1 and Cassell ‘The Beatmaker’. “I worked on various projects for a few years but when I met Red and Cassell, it sounds kind of cheesy, but it just felt right! They actually listened to what I had to say with regards to my music and what direction I wanted to go in, which in my experience I find pretty rare in this industry.”
So the team set to work on Marie’s debut album, working hard for almost 2 years.
The mixture of Marie’s influences, (Green Day, No Doubt, Spunge), with Red and Cassell’s, (hip hop, R&B;, garage), produces a unique, truthful, British sound, different to what you would find in the charts. “When it came to writing my album I wanted to write about things that would appeal to everyone, “she explains, “but also touch on issues that not many people write about. I also wanted to incorporate different styles on the tracks, rock, ragga and punk to name a few. I’m very open-minded to my music”.
