There's a lot of tension on here at the mo, so I've decided to offer people the opportunity to do some musical assignments! This isn't a competition or anything of the sort... just six things to try out with your music! Take these seriously, and I reckon you could learn something from here!

1. Create a piece of free groove! A piece with great rhythmic interest, but doesn't adhere to a BPM! Some extraterrestrial IDM, if ya like!

2. Create a song from your solo voice! Song, narration, beatbox... whatever! but no processing, no effects, no overdubbing and no accompaniement! Just you, in all your vocal glory!

3. Create a piece with 50% silence (not total silence)! Regard the silence as a presense rather than an absense! Strive to make the piece breathe, rather than gasp and choke!

4. Create a piece which uses sounds you have NEVER heard before, even for the percussion!

5. Create a piece in your least favourite genre! Can't stand gabba? Death Metal? Pop, even? No fair trashing or satirising here! The goal is to complete something competent in a genre you despise! There's plenty of unsigned stuff on the net if you need to find out more about the genre, so here's no excuse!

6. Create a piece that only YOU will EVER hear! Don't put it up online! Don't show it to friends! Don't even put it on a CD! Observe carefully how the results differ from the tracks you have shown to other people, be it on the net or at home!

Feel free to upload any tracks done from these tasks on MP3Unsigned (apart from task six, obviously)!

Have fun!

I thought that was an interesting idea... so I set out to do something in my least preferred genre...

That was awful.

So I changed the rules.

...to "create something that you never-ever expected you would".

That was a lot more fun (which I believe is the objective) !

So here's A Railroad Tune

It's short and silly, but it was fun, and thanks to Tedd-Z for making some good suggestions.

5 was impossible !  I was trying to do opera.  ( no offence to opera fans )  To my admittedly-unrefined-ears, opera sounds like satire, so there was no avoiding going satirical.

There's no harm in trying, Val!

Anyway, I'm sure there are other genres that you can't stand but can probably make a track out of them!
