I keep hearing from friends ect that artists ( like myself) are less talented for using samples to create music than artists who play instuments?
Do you think this is true or is it just a case of samples being yet one more tool to use for the endless creation of music/art?

Ok, Im probably going to annoy more than just a few people here, but in short..yes.

To say that making music with samples is less talented than people who write and arrange and produce from scratch, to me that is accurate.

Now alot of music produced from samples is probably better than some artists who create from scratch. But it definatley takes less talent.

The writers of original music have to think of the riffs , chord changes, melodies, lyrics. then put them in a workable , likeable order, then record the ideas to find out if they work. Artists who use samples have all the basic elements there and then cut and paste until they are happy.

So yes, sample useing does take less talent.

I have to agree with Steve - cheers Steve you saved me the writing LOL

That was lazy of me wasn't it Approve

For the record I can use just all samples in track, create one with just all midi, or create a naff sounding track with my bare hands, voice and some instruments LOL

Doesn't matter where the music comes from if it sounds good. A lot of people on the site started with Ejay or Acid and progressed from there, it's just a starting point for most people. There's no point getting precious about it all, anything that encourages someone to make some music is cool. There's a lot of very very cool tracks with samples on, if you move on and start to make progress playing an instrument or programming your own sounds then that is cool as well. If people like the music doesn't matter where it comes from really does it. And I just won a sample cd so I'm gonna use it if it kills me lol :)

well...........when I do a solo track I use percussion and drum samples cause I'm too lazy to learn how to create the rhythmn from scratch...for everything else I use my keyboard and various VST softwares...I don't know how to programme so everything is played in real time - if had to use samples for everything I would get bored bored bored.....in fact when I listen to my old tracks before I started working with Rick, I get bored bored bored with them now as well cause the rhythmn tracks have no sponteneity, no real life...
Soooo I won't speak to the question of talent but as a listener I prefer someone who is playing in real time rather than samples....and when I go to hear music I wanna SEE it performed - not watch someone load up a track - no offense to all you great dance DJs out there...

Leaning towards Steve on this...
Sample's aside, I do use artificial sounds ; eletronic drums and processors and compressers on everything...
Where do you draw the line.....
Playing/Writing the notes that are recorded live
Technology has made it easy for non players to make music...
Either way, it still takes talent to record a good track
Talent/art will always be subjectable to different views
Give a bonehead some slack, you may need some from him/her...Bob Brannan

the use of samples can be an art in itself.... i like a lot of sample based music... when its been manipulated enough to class it as original... some of my fav artits on this site use a lot of samples... personally id rather create the majority of my own sounds...but i do from time to time manipulate a drum loop or a vocal.... hard not to when you do a lot of remixes Big%20smile

Nail > head, Steve.

It obviously takes more talent to create a track from scratch than it does to use samples, in the same way it takes more talent to build all your instruments from bits of wood than it does to use factory-made instruments, or simply composing a bit of music for an orchestra to do the hard bit in playing it.

However, as Steve also said, talent has no bearing on the quality of the final piece of work.  Often, a piece of music containing samples can be better than a totally original piece.

I think the trick is in hiding the fact there are samples in there.  Tracks with samples slapped in like bits of debris in a shanty don't appeal to me.  Regardless of how interesting the sample is, if it's badly placed or mindlessly repetitive then the song is going to sound crap.  Talent then becomes necessary to make it an integral part of the whole.

To me it doesn't matter, it takes the talent of having style and a good ear to put together a quality (non-repetitive) track with just samples, if your a producer using nothing but samples than obviously you can't brag about your work aside from saying it sounds really good, if your not bragging and ppl are telling you your less talented than them than they're just jealous that you didn't have to work as hard as they did to produce a quality track. LOL

I agree with Steve

I use all my own synth patches and all that jazz. The only samples i use are individual drum hits and the occaissional vocal (which ill record if i can)
I think there's a lot of talented sample bashers in the world. For instance, Daft Punk, Fat Boy Slim (i hate to admit it)

Also, i sometimes make a loop of four bars and then mash it up in a sampler, sometimes you can get some nice effects and sounds on it.
To be honest, i used Ejay for like 1 month and my dad randomly bought Reason, which i still use today.
There's lots of arguements about sample bashers and people like me and Mancini who handcraft everything, im not sure what to make of it.
I know if i had a load of samples, i wouldnt be getting the satisfaction i wanted that "i made that!" plus you can't manipulate samples well enough to create something you want. I think you sort of have to work with what you've got
