Topic: Cubase SX3 vs Alesis SR-16 Posted: 21 December 2007 at 5:38pm |
I use cubase sx3 for all of my recording goodness. recently I bought an Alesis SR-16 drum machine because it has a couple of drum sounds I like on it.
Today, I spent about 3 hours trying to hook the two of them up to work, trying to use the SR-16 as a module for the drum sounds via midi. I've read all the manuals, read stuff off the interweb and it's just not playing the game for me.
Is there anyone out there who could give me step-by-step instructions as to how to achieve my goal, I would be incredibly grateful. I would also ask for them to be made clear enough for a half-witted idiot like myself to understand.
Thanks in advance

'Sounds via midi' does not compute. If you trying to record the drum sounds into Cubase like you do with guitar, you can do that the same way surely?

I like each drum track to be on a separate channel and doing that manually is a nightmare. The drum machine has midi inputs and outputs. I also use a Mackie Spike for inputting into cubase. Midi just confuses the wotsits out of me, to be honest.
I've tried assinging each drum sound to a midi channel on the drum machine, programming the patterns into the midi key editor in cubase, hooking up a midid keyboard to see if that helps, everything I can think of. I've read tonnes of stuff which only baffled me further.
Just generally confused and in need of help :(

Hey Truj,
The SR-16 is rather a simple drummachine. It only has 1 stereo (or 2 mono) outputs via wich the SOUND goes. It has midi in/out via wich MIDI information goes. The Mackie is rather a simple sound interface, only 2 line ins.
Midi information and audio information are two completely different things.
Connect midi out of your alesis to midi in on your Mackie and vice versa. This will allow you to control the alesis through Cubase. NOT RECORD THE SOUNDS IT PRODUCES !
To record sounds : connect the audio out to the audio ins on your Mackie. If you want to record the different sounds on different channels, you will have to do this track by track.
If you want to record all the different drumpieces (e.g. bassdrum, snare, hihats) simultanously on seperate tracks you will have to : get a higher spec audio interface (multiple inputs) AND get a higher spec drummachine (multiple outputs).
So if I understand your problem correctly .... what you're trying to do is impossible.
Hans.

Thank you Hans. I had an idea that what I wanted would be impossible. Just gave your suggestions a shot and I can record them track by track but it's a mighty pain in the Archie. Fruity Loops it is, for now, until I upgrade the drum machine and audio interface.
