Suddenly, without any input from the public (as usual) our government has introduced a program where there is a 20-cent deposit on wine and liquor bottles. Now, that might seem sensible – I’m all for 'green' policies… BUT (here's the stupid part): In order to get your deposit back, you have to turn in your bottles at The Beer Store… (not the Liquor Store, or the Wine Store). I don't drink beer. I have no other reason to go to The Beer Store, and it’s much further away than the Liquor & Wine Store. Doing the math… I reckon I can carry, at best, 8 wine bottles that distance without collapsing. It will be a 40-minute round trip, and I will likely need/want an hour’s nap afterwards. I will be rewarded $1.60 (of my own money) for that effort.
Does this seem wrong, or is it just me ? Desperately searching for another way around it… I could take the bus… that would cost me $5.50 for the round trip, showing a net loss of $3.90 Or, I could buy a little red wagon ($11.99 US + shipping & handling)… it’s looking like I could get maybe 36 bottles in there ($7.20)… but where would I store the bottles, while I’m accumulating that quantity, and, where would I store the wagon ? ( ...must say, I don’t much fancy the picture of myself hauling a wagonload of wine bottles down the street, either... ) I currently have 2 empty wine bottles sitting on my kitchen counter. I’m getting tired of looking at them. Methinks they’re about to go into the Recycling Bin, just like they used to -- and just like they used to, they’ll be 'recovered' by the neighbour-guy who is into making his own wine. Now that's recycling But the government has successfully swindled me for 40˘, haven't they ? This has been your hormone report from |

Yes. Isn't that annoying, right to begin with ?
Here's how it works:
At The Beer Store, you can buy Canadian beer, some American beers, and even fewer imported beers.
At the Wine Store, you can buy only Canadian wine.
At the Liquor Store, you can buy all liquors, Canadian wine, low-scale imported wines, upscale imported beers, and Canadian and American beers in fancier bottles.
And if you want expensive wine, domestic or imported, there's a subsidiary of the Liquor Store, called Vintages, and that's in a seperate location as well. And when you get there, they're usually sold out of whatever it was you wanted anyway.

I'd just bring them to the neighbour, maybe you'll get a few bottles of wine for free for your effort.

Finally an alc selling system that makes sense!
![]() And then Valerie juggling with numbers has always been a delight to watch for me. Quite a spectacle.
![]() No, of course, all that seems pretty stupid, VWilloughby. As you say the fundamental thought is a good one, but the whole idea doesn't seem to be really thought through enough.
We do know the recycling refund on bottles here for quite a long time now, and it works very good, because you can get your refund just about anywhere.

Pruneau, that's a good suggestion. But they make that by adding water to some sort of a powder.
![]() And true, WaVeS, getting the refund from the place you bought it, would make a LOT more sense. ![]() Edited by VWilloughby - 20 February 2007 at 6:13pm |

WOW ! I heard there's 3 kinds of people : one that can do math, and one that can't !
I'm in that last category. But I'd like a beer Valerie....
