Here's your 'machine'.  It has a 100% success rate...

Hit Song Science

But music is an art, not a science, otherwise we'd have machines writing songs.

Doesnt this look like a scam. I have no doubt you can analyze asong and get favourable comparisons but thats no guarantee for a hit.

Different parts of the world have different tastes. What makes a hit in Europe has no guarantees in the states or Asia.

Sorry but its a scam

Well, you'ld fill the program with hits from the relevant time and place, wouldn't you Steve?

Its amazing how many people are offended by the suggestion that music is based on patterns.

I write alot of songs for other people, different styles. If someone wants a specific thing then I analyize a similar track, break it down, and then build a song along that design. Now I come up with some good stuff and not so good stuff. But is that because I followed a pattern or because I'm good a creating melodies in my head.

I have no doubt you can build in similarities into songs but that doesn't automaticaly make it a hit.

But I still think this is a scam

Oh by the way I'm still waiting for the big hit

There are no guarantees with this...except that if you DON'T score high, then AREN'T going to get hit with the song taken on it merits (as opposed to gimmicks).

I'm fairly sure its not a scam, and I'm sure there are many people on this site who are aware of these 'rules' and use them all the time.

Just look at the Official Chart for proof.  Most of the songs there follow these rules.

No, no, no, sorry Virus you seemed to have picked me up wrong. There is deninatley ways of improving your chances of having a hit, but my point was that if I follow a similar track thats been a hit, Same bar counts, same transition of scales, major to minor for emotional effect etc, then that doesn't make it a good song. I may have done all this and written a shocking melody.

So I can sit and duplicate a track and analyze it till the cows come home, but there is no gaurantees, I mean face it thats why most people hire a producer instead of just an engineer, the producer has worked with enough bands to influence a track with certain attributes, to make it more commercialy appealing.

Does that make more sense, or am I just rambling again.

I think you are both right in that hits are written inside the parameters of these rules and because of this, it is meaningless. When broken down even slighlty, music is math. Notes and numbers come from the same mother (whoever she is) so there must be rules that govern what works and what "Shouldn't". Mathematical patterns that are more "pleasing" when introduced audibly. This only makes sense, however, what makes a fart so funny. You hear a million of them in your life and the last one was just as funny as the first. Take any song that just thoroughly sucks, ( one of mine will do) and place at random, fart sounds throughout the song. Placed in no recognizable patterns, just stick them in there...and now you have a hit.....Math won't see it coming.
