Having been a major Hawkwind fan (at least until the PXR5), I've realised that one of the major contributions towards my love of their music is the unbelievable drumming of Simon King.
The guy played like I have never heard before or since, not with a perfect beat, but with an organic driving beat that made the drums a real instrument in all of their music.
So, who can you come up with that is a better drummer than Simon King
(and if anyone mentions the P C words, I'll be round their house and puncture their eardrums)

Well I must say i've always enjoyed Ringo's drumming but i'm not sure Lennon did! I recall reading that when Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world that Lennon replied 'He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles'

There's a track on this site, I can't remember it's name, or the name of the band, that has an amazing drummer.
The band consisted of native American Indian guys, and was recorded in
what sounded like a shed. The music was basically guitar-driven
rock, but with an outstanding drummer, and for me he was the highlight
of the tracks they uploaded. I even said so in my comments, but didn't
note down any details.
Who are they!? Can anyone helpa brother?

And I agree with Jaymz about Keith Moon, especially visually. Dig out 'The Kids Are Alright' and watch it all over again.
My second would be Reni (Alan Wren) from the Stone Roses for making
madchester happen, bringing out the 'Funky Drummer' beat and altering
the way the drums in pop music sounded. Not bad for a sticksman!

I'm a sucker for Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not your classical rock drummer, but this guy surely uses his kit as an instrument too. Matter of fact, after the Banshees split in 96 Siouxsie and Budgie continued as the creatures, with only drums and vocals, and they have quite the following. Aaaaah Siouxsie! Sorry, what was the question?

I'm with you there Pruneau, Budgie is a total genuis, and also one of my favourite drummers. New Order/Joy Division's Steve Morris is also a very, very underated player....OK I know I'm biased, but anyone who has given 'Closer' or 'Mvement' more than a cursory listen will realise just how individual and distinctive that guy actually is.

Aye, I could go with Budgie as a close second, in fact, I'm off to play the Peepshow album right now.
