Phase Reversal - Remove a Vocal
LIQUID 12-05-2010, 13:52 PM

I've read about a technique called Phased Reversal that in some cases can do a pretty good job at removing the vocal from a track.

Anyone have any experience of this method and have they achieved it in Reason 4?

Ant

Never heard of that working for vocals Ant... the only times I've ever seen it in action was in the studio where the engineer used to get rid of hum or hiss from the background.

It only really works on older songs were the vocal (along with the kick, snare and bass) are in the middle and are in mono. Heres a vid on youtube showing you how to do it in Audacity.

Sorry read your post properly and and realised you were on about Phase reversal/inversion. This works best if you have an instrumental track and the full track.

What you do is line up both track precisely and invert the phase the instrumental track thus cancelling all instrumentation leaving only the vocals.

Its far from perfect thoug as it leaves other artifacts like certain hi hats frequencies and other unwanted noise.

Hey Ant - this is the technique i was referring to when I said I bet you couldn't isolate my daft vocal on the track we started - you have the original (w/o vocal) and you have a rendering with vocal. A = music+vocal, B = music

A-B = vocal
