I need a web host for my web site!
Erik Jurado Erik Jurado is offline 26-06-2012, 07:35 AM

I have a Mac, so that means I used iWeb for my web site, which meant I stuck with Apple and used their MobileMe service as a web host. They are stopping their service in 5 days - June 30th, and I waited a little too long to find a replacement web hosting site. I know NOTHING about web hosting sites except that it needs to be Mac compatible and inexpensive. Hopefully where I can have my own domain name, but not a deal breaker.

I don't know if this is too technical of a question to ask on a music site, so I will throw in the fact that I will be using it mainly for my tunes to have their own pages that kick ass - how's that? Any help would be awesome - because I don't want to lose any traffic. I had someone visit my site just last week for less than a minute. LMAO!!!

My Web Site that will be gone on June 30th

Erik

Well I don't know what your ideal budget is but I use Inmotionhosting.com, ran me around $160 for a full year, I chose them because of their reputation, no point in linking you to my site because I did the HTML myself so you won't see their features...

I suggest Fatcow... very affordable and you can transfer your existing domain for free. Don't know if they are Mac compatible though.

Hope this helps Erik.

As far as I can see your webpage is built from standard html code - i copied it (because I can) and put it in a text file which I renamed erik.htm.

This then opened as a webpage but because all the jpeg pictures your html code accesses aren't available to my "erik.htm" it couldn't load em and just left blanks where they should be.

This was enough to prove to me that there is nuthin different to your page that makes it "mac" special.

My website does the same if it hasn't got all the jpegs in the same or referenced directory - basically ya can see it but there is no content to the pictures.

Regarding prices, I use 123-reg.co.uk to host my site and it's a few GBP per month. I didn't use a flash player like yours tho.... I embedded the code from reverbnation cos it's dead easy (which means I don't have overheads of storing all my mp3s on the host site)

Hope this helps and if you are in a position to send me the jpegs that YOUR html code calls up I can see if it can be made stand-alone and easily transferable dude.

Andy

Default Thanks for the ideas guys!

I ended up going for DropBox - which allows 2 GB of free space. My site only uses about 1.2 GB at the moment, so I am using the freebie! It is kind of slow (on my machine) but free is awesome! The only downside of using them is I'd never remember the address. It is:

But, FREE IS FREE!!!!

Thanks again!

Erik

Hi Erik,
My advice is to go with Hostgator and build your site through wordpress. Wordpress can be installed through the account cpanel by simply clicking a button. Then, it's as easy as choosing either a free website theme or even better a paid theme (check themeforest.com) and clicking the install button. Once you choose a well supported theme you don't need to know any tech stuff to get a very cool website up and running. Hostgator is also very cheap, you can get hosting for around $5pm. Regarding your domain name, you will have bought that from a domain name seller - if not, get it from namecheap.com or godaddy.com - then you need to point your name servers to your hostgator account. It sounds complicated but its not really, everything is in the tutorial videos and once you follow the steps you can't go wrong.
Hope that helps,
Dave

I'll leave that previous post there for anyone trying to set up a domain. I see you got dropbox, very cool - the great thing is you can get lodas of extra space by simply inviting people to join dropbox from your invitation link. Have fun with it!

I know of machighway, meccahosting, threeHosts, littleoak, macdock, dogbark.

NB: I don't own either of the companies, just check them out and see which one suits you best.
