Trance Reverb
Steven Silverthorn Steven Silverthorn is offline 21-07-2010, 21:28 PM

I noticed in the Nitrous Oxide - Dream Catcher (Club Mix) -posted by Matt - that the relationship between the reverb of the pads and lead instruments is awesome.

My own pitiful attempts at getting this right seem to fall well short. I generally set up two different reverbs on sends - one long and one short. I will maximise the wet signal with zero dry. (The amount of send signal varies of course.)

Often though the relationship between my pads and lead is not the greatest, even if they share the same long reverb. Obviously the short reverb I use on hats and percussion.

Clearly I need to work on this and get a kind of sweet spot reverb for both lead sounds and pads. Perhaps I should begin by getting a great reverb on one or the other first?

Any advice here appreciated.

You put reverb on hats and percussion ????

i have never done that you see , i was told it will had shit to your mix ect muddiness.. but i think il have to have a go just for the heck of it lol.

i only ever use reverb on me pads and leads, im the same as you phil i struggle too get that pro sound
maybe im missing some point along the way until then i just keep practising tips ect.

and if im really stuck on reverb for pads , il use a preset and then adjust to my liking :O)

As a rule my intention is to keep the hats and percussion dry. I will try a short reverb though just to offer a different possibility. I let my ear decide. Reverb can help push something back in the mix. Sometimes with percussion you can actually automate reverb so that it bleeds in at the end of a 4 or 8 bar cycle, and it can add atmosphere - but this might even be a big reverb! Experimenting with filters and reverb can offer interesting effects - but if it sounds bad, it is easy to change.

I know a lot of pros eq their reverbs, cutting out low frequencies or unwanted reflections. I have only begun doing this recently - so I am no expert. I have known tracks in which the kick picks up a mysteriously unwanted reverb, and I think this comes from the kick sucking up those low reverberations, cos all reverb ends up on the master bus, even if your kick channel is dry as the Atacama Desert. I honestly don't know, and thankfully this doesn't happen often.

In general,as I'm by no means a trance producer,I often use a short stereo reverb (only a midges dick) on the hats to brighten and widen them and always cut out the lower freqs and sometimes some of the mids on big reverbs, especially for vox.

...and it still sounds muddy!

try sidechaing the verb with the original audio so that it ducks when the audio is played (instantly less mud!) then set the release to taste. #you can also do this with delay (or any effect) because that can muddy a mix just as good as verb.

Reverb is a wonderful effect and can make a mix sound unreal,

but its very "dangerous" to use, as it can easily destroy a mix more then make it better, often known to make things all muddy and make ur track sound like its being played across a long hallway~

one thing i keep in mind is keeping reverb more stereo:mono ~ and always EQ it to cut off the freq u want to keep it away from

and ya sidechain the reverb is also effective

and neil u can put reverb on hats if u like sounds really especially if u want like a long cymbol sound to last longer

Good advice as always from Marty and Matt.

You might wanna check this tutorial out as well.

I notice that in his tutorials Jezper doesn't group instruments using the rack or fx and also tends to use different reverbs on each instrument. His stuff sounds awesome so his way is as good as any.

I do the exact same thing i separate my Reverbs in different channels only i do that in FL studio, once u seperate into different channel u can apply seperate effects to the reverb ex compression, eq, filtering without touching the DRY state of the synth~

Don;t think Jezper has a tutorial on sound design since his early fm kick and percussion one - no longer up.

I did find that he is now using Omnisphere - and I have to say I am tempted to get this!

omnisphere

Also here is a neat way in Live PLUS Omnisphere to save CPU
