November Competition - "Permission Granted"

The key to this months competition is 'Permission'.

You get to recreate/interpret/cover or give tribute to any piece of music that you have permission to do so.

By permission we mean either:

1) Public domain/copyright free music (eg Mozart) or...

2) Something you have express permission to reinterpret by the original artist (eg get permission from the original artist here on mp3unsigned).

If you decide to rework a track that is on mp3unsigned.com then you need to get written permission to do so, this can be in the form of either a post here in the forum or a PM to Admin. Please clear permission with the artist BEFORE you spend time working on anything, you don't have to post this permission until the time that you post your track (if you wish).

-This competition is open to all genres.
-Any genre piece of music can be reworked by any other genre (eg rock/trance or dnb/classical etc).
- You can rework/reinvent/interpret/cove/pay tribute or do whatever else you want with your track
-Winner will be voted by the community
-The winner will receive 1 month free promotion on the mp3unsigned homepage and forum and the track will be released on iTunes and Amazon etc through Tunecore.
-No unauthorised samples can be used
-Remixes are not eligible
-Closing date is 30th November

Please post anything related to this competition here in this thread . Trying to keep this one open to as broad a base as possible.

Most importantly, have fun

A

EDIT: Please read the posts below by M4t3z and Tony Miller for additional info on public domain works!

Here is the "Official Comp Page"
Please remember to leave any comments or votes for any track on the artists' own page.
A link is provided on the comp page for each track.

Sounds good, a little pre-warning though. Music pre 1923 might be public domain but if you download audio o midi, make sure thats copyright free. For example, teh audio might be from a cd produced as far back as the 80s and is still under copyright so make sure you check where teh audio source is coming from and also, midi is copyrighted to, you will need to ask permission from the midi author before using it or dont and just pretend you made it! lol

Went a little into one there! lol I just wanted to say that if anyone wants to recreate/remix/whatever any of my tracks i give you the full permission to do so, no need to ask!

Succinctly put. Just to add to this, there are 2 levels of copyright we have to adhere to:

(c)© This is the copyright pertaining to the composition and is binding up to
70 years after the death of the composer(s).

(p)℗ This is the copyright pertaining to any recordings of a composition and is
binding up to 50 years after the end of the calendar year in which it was
recorded. This is soon to be extended to 75 years in the EU.

So be careful out there!

If a cd was recently released of audio originally recorded 50+ years ago is this still ok to use?

You can't use the audio. If the tune's creator has been dead for 70 years you can use the tune as long as no copy or part copy of a (< 50 year old) recording is used in your output.

Confused? You will be!

And for those in the U.S.who didn't know:

What if I have cover songs on my album?
It's easier than you think. You have permission, by law! You just need to NOTIFY the publisher.

Please note that the below is not official legal advice, it is ONLY for the U.S.A., we are not your lawyers, and you should always contact your attorney before entering into any contract such as a license.

If you have recorded a cover version of someone else's song, and you plan to make that recording available over the Internet, the following information applies to you.

You must follow these steps BEFORE you make your recording available for distribution to the public!

If you record a cover version of a song, (meaning your performance of a song that has been released in the U.S. with consent of the copyright owner), you are entitled by law to release your recording commercially, and the owner of the copyright to the song cannot prevent you from doing so.

The Copyright Act provides for what is called a "Compulsory License" for downloads and CD sales, which means that if you follow the steps set forth by statute, you can distribute your recording of that song on a CD or over the internet. This Compulsory License is only available for sales in the United States. Other uses of masters, such as streaming, conditional downloads, and the like, are not subject to a Compulsory License. A separate license from the publisher is needed in those cases.

The following details the procedure for individuals to obtain a compulsory license to digitally distribute cover songs over the Internet to end users in the United States:
