There aren't that many artists I come across who get me to the point where I'm thinking 'I fekkin MUST review this guy' A tiny, tiny handful of artists come through to me through the general buildup of seeing their names mentioned so many damn times.. Atom Tha Immortal is one of those artists. Being split between several boards (this guy is a bloody STAR over at MP3 Unsigned) and with the review schedule I keep it's almost impossibe to get to everybody but there are certain artists who really should be checked out. As it happens, Atom put himself forward for review this month and I almost snapped his arm off grabbing the track from him. Since then the tension has been unreal. First off, he works in a genre I've always had a special regard for (hip hop) AND anyone who get the attention he gets just has to have something going for them.
So, buckle up your bits and let's go and find out...
Atom is a serious dude. Hailing from Riverside CA, he's obviously steeped in the stuff of life and his production definitely spells that out big time. The sound is right-on-the-money-beats; interesting (and different) musical touches and a clean, solid rap delivered with authority and a great deal of style. Withdrawal is an edit/remix - the original being a track from Bedlam Emotion - and reminds me musically of the gabba genre; very heavy and as hard as bullets. On this showing there is no doubt in my mind that I could not only reccomend that people check this bad boy out, but that I have found myself a new source of the kind of musical fire in the belly, warm glow in the heart material I live for. See, I put my heart, my soul, my breath and everything that's really important into my work, and I recognise the same feeling from other musicians and I get it from this guys tracks in truckloads. Besides having his shit nailed down, the second surprise that hits you on encountering this guy, is the lyrical content. This is no 'bitches and ho' rant, or even the usual paraphenalia that accompanies certain strains of hip hop.
You want more, here's an encore.... ;)
Atom is that rare thing; a commited Christian rapper. Maybe that's not so obvious on Withdrawal as it is on a second track I listened to called A I. Nothing like as hard as Withdrawal, AI could almost be classed as gentle. Starting with a femal voice and cello, it lulls you into a false sense of security before the track kicks your head in just to make sure you are awake. The combination of cello and female voice sets up some truly beautiful sonic moments as they hit certain notes, the resonance between them is eerie. As musically proficent as this guy undoubtedly is I do suggest you read the lyrics as well, it will help in your enjoyment no end. This man is a thinker and it shows, his lyrics are a study for the happy clappy Christian crowd that seriousness and committment are just as valid as endlessly praising the Lord. In some ways, it carries much more force and power this way. AI is a serious track that I definitely will be keeping for a long time. The same holds true with Withdrawal, although to my mind this didn't carry the punch of the former track.
You really should check this guy out. Solid, dependable and oh so on the money it's frightening... and AI is just stunning....
