Touched by God
Hi, From a fellow-left-hander, punk-loving,unpaid writer, I can really relate to your story and songs. You have a great voice - like a Vanian/Oakey meld! Good luck with all, Kevin.
Alex has always had a passion for music, especially angry, energetic rock. During his teens and early 20’s he played in a range of punk and post-hardcore bands traveling up and down the country playing to sound guys, bar staff and the bass players mum and dad. Like for many, his dream of ‘living the dream’ seemed more distant with every empty show and uncommented Myspace post. He eventually succumbed to the harsh realities of life and got a job after another drummer leaves and a band falls apart.
Leaving the comfort and innocence of youth is hard and naturally Alex went back to school but as a teacher in secondary and became the awkward teacher who’d tell kids “I’m a punk rocker when I’m not teaching!” As much as he loved his work and working with kids, the allure of music proved too tempting as Alex was offered the lead guitar position in an Elvis tribute band. Although unfamiliar with Elvis Presley’s music, Alex soon found a new love for 50’s rock n roll music which kick started a love for a mellower sound. Sadly though after a relatively successful year, the drummer left and once again the band broke down. Alex Young found himself on his own and with a massive desire to play music. This was the December of 2012.
Alex, like many, had always confided in music as a release for emotion and after the disastrous split from his wife and child, he poured his soul into songs about depression, mental illness, suicide but also hope, joy and living life to the full. In the space of a month he had recorded a catalogue of songs that reflected his own life over the past 3 years. From the eerie madness of a man ill with want, to the numbness that reality brings when something monumentally catastrophic hits home, to the little moments that bring a new dawn in your life, to the road to recovery.
