Slimdog, as he is known in the music scene, was born David Bell Jr. on March 22nd, 1964 in
Akron, Ohio to David Sr. and Carmen Bell. The oldest of three children (he has a brother and sister),
he was raised by parents always wanted the best for their children. Having a father in Law Enforcement and a mother who worked at a library, AAA and El Paso County's Clerk and Recorder,
they encouraged their children to be good people and to be good at whatever they chose to do
in life.
David and his siblings took up playing instruments early on. His brother Earl played the trumpet,
sister Adrienne, the piano and he the drums. At one point he wanted to be involved with the Arts;
tapdance, but with disapproval from his father, he stuck with playing the drums instead. In eighth
grade, he even choreographed a dance routine for a school talent show involving his siblings that took second place (to this day he feels he should of took first!).
David got the nickname "Slimdog" from a childhood friend and fellow highschool football team-
mate, Keith Grundy. Slimdog remembers like it was yesterday: " Practice was ending for the day.
Keith and I were walking back to the lockeroom when another teammate tried to make a joke on me at my expense. I came back with a hilarious punchline to "dog" him out. All the team was laughing their butts off. Keith started shouting, "SLIMDOG IN THA' HOUSE! YEAH SLIMDOG!".
You see, in highschool I weighed about 140 pounds if that and was 5'11". That's where the "Slim"
came from." I liked the nickname Keith gave me so much, so I got this red t-shirt from home and bought some iron on blue lettering and put "Slimdog" on it. That was in my Senior year of highschool."
The nickname stuck so much that when he attended college at The Colorado College
in Colorado Springs, Colorado, not many friends even knew his real name. Some don't even know to this day!
Even though Slimdog played the drums from 5th grade through highschool (marching band, orchestra and jazz), things kept him too busy in college to the point where he stopped playing. He did find another "instrument" that caught his interest...turntables. It was aound 1982 when Slimdog volunteered to dj for the college's Black Student Union and a "Soul Night" they wanted to sponsor.
With this so called new music "fad", Hip Hop was just in its infant stages in the genre game and Slimdog's love of this music and R&B;, he had amassed a good collection of albums and tapes to keep students dancing all night long. At first "Soul Night" was a bust. Then the Black Student Union dropped their sponsorship. With some help from Slimdog's friends and fraternity brothers (Kappa Sigma), word spread around campus and eventually Colorado Springs. Soon, Slimdog deejayed to a packed house at "Benjamin's Basement every Tuesday night.
Because of the popularity of the night around Colorado Springs, this caught the attention of the music director and radio personalities at KRCC 91.5 FM, the college's radio station and Slimdog was asked to host a radio show featuring the Hip Hop and R&B; he played at "Soul Night". In 1983, Slimdog teamed up with another host, "The Player", and did a show called, "The Nightshift" from 12 am to 5am nightly. The show ended up being #1 in its timeslot for the city of Colorado Springs by Arbitron Ratings. After 2 years of airtime, the show was cancelled because KRCC needed donations from its listeners for each show it broadcasted and because Hip Hop was in its early stages, no support was given for the show. Slimdog and The Player soon accepted another radio show offer with KPIK-AM in Colorado Springs, but that lasted only a year. After doing various jobs, in 1991 Slimdog was hired by a major carrier as a flight attendant. A job he still has to this day.
The music bug bit Slimdog again in 2004 when a good friend opened a cd store at a mall and built a studio in the store to have local talent come in and make tracks. After watching for sometime, Slimdog felt that he also could make music that people would like. He invested in music programs and equipment and he put some of his music on indie music sites such as Soundclick.com, ArtistLaunch.com and Audiostreet.net. Some of his material climbed up the genre charts with some hitting #1 overall in the specific genre. Sometimes the same song would hit #1 on two different sites. Artists began to request his music for collaborations and some of those collabs would top the charts as well. Slimdog has proven to the indie world he is serious and he is in the music industry for the long haul...NOW, it's time for the rest of the music world to know...
