Quit My Band
besides all the superlatives for the instrumentalists in here...the vocalist is fantastic! Great style and delivery!
Don't know who you are...Timmy!...but smalllife is a really tight, superbly mixed rocker of a band, and this tune, Quit My Band is incredibly awesome....so what's been going on in the past 10 years? Welcome back!
Superb. Canard aka Hogdaddy
This starts off like a mid 70s Hawkwind song, can't think which one, it'll come to me. Wish the Crew could sing/play as well as thing - our latest would sound ace done in a Smalllife stylee.

smalllife (the band) were formed in a fashion by song writer Jaymz lee Shaw in June 2005. Previously to that Jaymz had been going it alone, writing and recording his own style of acoustic mis-spent musings. However the desire to rock, need to electrify and want to collaborate and pontificate had been there since forever and was now something that needed to be done. After a series of failed collabs and ventures, jaymz arranged a jam with fellow songwriter and recording artist garry (Gaz) at bad apple studios in the summer of 05. After 3 hours, half an 8th, ten cans and four new songs the seeds were sown. Soon after Jaymz recruited another friend and bass player from his first band (Pulse c1999) ben and then there were three. Gaz ex senseless drummer followed and would play a part time role for the remainder of 05.
The set up worked, some people can just jam these guys did, garrys riffs helped jaymzs rythum and more jovial writing style helped to offset jaymzs brutal and sometimes controversial style. After just a few months of saturday jamming smalllife recorded their first demo as a band in November 2005. Despite firmly wanting to recruit a proper singer and disliking his own voice, jaymz with backing from garry took the vocal plunge and the first record was produced. It was cheaply and quickly done and unfortunatly due to recording limitations lost some of the live raw feel that they had in rehearsal. But it stands as their first effort and is simply the start, the tip of the iceberg.
What followed was 'Arrogance' a 5 song EP recorded at prism studio's in stoke on trent! Recorded in the summer this is and went on to be the bands most accomplished and successful work to date! The epic of the album 'All the things you said' hit # 2 in the official charts and stayed there for 2 weeks! The songs 'Time' and 'Master' also hit the charts and 'keep on' had people rocking all over the globe!
Regardless their are always problems at the top and the rock and roll lifestyle encourages them. In this month which is July Guitarist Garry left the band due to mutual preferences. smalllife continue with for the short term with me picking up all the guitar work and playing on as a three piece with slightly different set list : ) all the remianing members have rallied together and are using this opportunity to realise a 'new dawn' 'era' where we go further than we have ever gone before. Already auditioning for a new style lead guitarist we aint gonna stop untill we find a slash esque monster of a man and i am quite excited about taking the band in a new more acomplished direction. Gigs already booked will be honoured. And once new guitarist is installed smalllife will be hitting the road out of Stoke on trent to find better gigs and music venues (so watch out). More recording time already booked for Autumn 2006, and T - Shirts will be available soon : ) Keep on rocking!!!! Jaymz Lee Shaw (July 06).
Already preparing another demo and live shows in late 2006 smalllife are here whether they like it or not. The bands jaymz lee shaw has his own solo performed stuff on here as well - see the links below. Thanks for your support, keep unmanafactured, unaspiring guitar music alive.
In the week smalllife hit #1 on mp3unsigned.com came their new 5 track EP 'Realisation'
Check out the first single 'Christian'
BAND OF THE YEAR 2006!!!!!
Absolutely no doubt Smalllife has been one of this reviewers' greatest finds this year, and remember you read it hear first. After a year full of Must Have's I believe Smalllife have proved beyond doubt that they are a worthy addition to a long, long, line of top class (nay world class) rock bands. Rock? Aaah, but there's a tricky subject to pin down innit?? I mean wh
As was said when this review was requested to me, "it's been a while" and well yes it has, me and my band have been away for ages and i have to say it made me smile to know i was going to get to review smalllife as one of my first reviews back, not taking anything away from the others of course. And i must say from start to finish i was not let down in the slightest, however before i give smallli
There's no doubting that Smalllife have come from nowhere this year and stolen a lot of thunder in the process. Now on both Soundclick and MP3 Unsigned, this rock band from Stoke-on-Trent, have made a great many friends with their extremely high energy rock music gathering themselves three must haves from me in the process. In my own defence I have to admit that I am an absolute sucker
For those of you who don’t know me I am the singer/song writer here at mp3unsigned.com. You find some of my tunes as half of the duet Serenity (www.mp3unsigned.com/serenity.asp) and as solo artist RainyD (www.mp3unsigned.com/rainyd.asp). Having been asked to review one of Smalllfe’s song’s I was only too happy too. Rock is a genre I have only recently got really into myself. Thanks to a Mosher
Smalllife have blasted onto my radar in a big way over the space of but a few tracks, primarily because they are a rock band that actually delivers the goods in every way. Proof of that claim, at least for this reviewer, are the three Smalllife tracks residing on my hard drive. For an artist to deliver such blistering tracks every time is just impossible and every time I now approach a
Smalllife - Christian As a practicing atheist with views bordering on the agnostic and a deep love of thrashy punk, I run directly into the open arms of this song and it certainly welcomes me in, rather like a stranger allowing me into his house to empty his fridge, watch the programmes that I want to watch on his 50" plasma, use all the hot water, drink all his booze, smoke all his tabs and gene
Coming from the background that I do, I always get a great deal of pleasure when I come across a good rock band. That is what I thought I had with Smalllife until I reviewed Need To Buy A Woman (August 2006), and then things became MUCH clearer. Judging by performance, passion and live sound, Smallife has all the makings of becoming a great rock band. If you think that I am indul
Yep! Read the first review and and see where the reaction came from. Hauntingly beautiful vocals that relayed to me the desperateness the subject of the song is. The theme is very socially relevant with the overindulgence of the wealthy and the exploitation of that to the public nowadays. Mail order bride anyone? My highlight thoug
Although I'd encountered Jaymz Lee Shaw before, the first time I came across his Smalllife band was with All The Things You Said (July 2006) and - being the rock animal I am - I lapped it up. In that review I likened them to an early Aerosmith, and that is a compliment indeed. Almost everything in that track screamed rock - if looked at another way - mosh pit mayhem!!. The same i
I had much confusion when I first met Jaymz Lee Shaw over which was his material and which was his bands - Smalllife. Well, seems like all the tracks I have reviewed so far (a couple I think, and quite nice they were too). Older (April 2006) and Woke Up This Morning (May 2006) were both excellent examples of the light, Pink Floyd tinged rock I have come to like as practiced by a great
Smalllife. Great band, who are consistantly reminding me of how raw they can be. this number is very solid. it starts off with a really catchy guitar riff that keeps you around long enough to really feel the song. positives: The singing. is dirty, its gritty, and gives you an underground rock fist in the air to the government fascists! (conservatives) hey so what i l
smalllife - All the Things You Said
Righty, here we go for another wednesday session, starting off with the one and only Smalllife, a good way to start for me, this track falls into the rock genre, im going to start with the negatives and firstly i would have to point out the recording quality is not great, but then again i feel this should be no basis to rate a track on unless its been recorded on a dictaphone, which it hasn'
Musical Structure-----
The structure of this track is great. Very by the book. which is a good thing. the highlight of the track is when the lead guitar comes in and really grooves.
a predictable music structure that doesnt break any rules. Safe and effective
I actually listened to this song 5 times before I had decided to write anything, it had more appeal for me each time I listened, and here is what I have decided.
