Born in New York, and now a resident of New Haven, Connecticut, Kai Blackwood is a songwriting machine and a vibrant performer, unafraid to get a little dirt on his soul. An amalgam of gothic and unapologetic hard rock, rockabilly, razor-sharp metal & Misfits era punk rock is what Kai Blackwood brings to the table…
…think of it as a sledgehammer that you can dance to.
Doing time in the smoke-filled clubs all over America, Kai was the vocalist/guitarist for the American East Coast metal powerhouse Violent Industry – a band that had earned the die-hard respect of the American music underground through sweat and relentless touring. Violent Industry had gained legions of rabid followers during their tenure, and their reign was undisputed throughout the underground. However, metal music was becoming mentally limiting & Kai decided that committing himself to a specific genre of music was leading to a creative paralysis.
(cue dramatic music – fade into uplifting sounds)
Ultimately, Kai disbanded his beloved V.I. and holed up in a dark and creative place where it all started to come together…trust me – it’s not as creepy as it sounds.
In the fall of 2001, Kai flew to Toronto and proceeded to lay down eleven tracks for his album “..damned if you don’t”. He was fortunate to have enlisted the talents of Dale Harrison (drums) and Tim White (bass) of Universal’s Headstones –Canadian rock icons and damn killer players.
Upon his return from Canada, Kai received a call from US underground heavyweights, Gargantua Soul, to replace the freshly departed Jason Bozzi (now of DryKillLogic) on guitar. While it was Kai’s first experience as a side player in a band, he decided to postpone the release of his solo album to take the G Soul gig, knowing full well that being part of Gargantua Soul would be an awesome experience, opening up the doors and putting him face to sweaty face with potential new fans of his own music. And after two years of hard-hitting touring with the band, Kai knew it was time to get back to just that - his own music.
In 2004, Kai struck up a licensing deal with Australian independent label, Blow Up Records to license his album “…damned if you don’t” along with some newly recorded tracks. The album is scheduled for it’s Australian release in fall of 2005.
Success in life belongs to those daring enough to chase it… so saddle up and quit whining.
