“You guys don’t have a single song that sucks!” shares an ultra-hyper fan as the band members autograph his newly acquired Ben Zephyr T-Shirt. That must be one of the greatest compliments a rock band could get…
Ben Zephyr’s varied influences include Rock, Funk, Electronica and Indie. The resulting sound is a gritty, groove-based Rock & Roll that hints at Audioslave and Live. “We are trying to ride the fine line between honest art and fan-focused entertainment”, says Krisz. “Ben Zephyr is a melting pot of musical styles, but we all share the same desire to write good songs that our fans will enjoy.”
Despite their recent emergence in the North Texas music scene, these musicians combine a vast range of experience – from the clubs and studios of Europe to opening on arena stages in the U.S. By the summer of 2003 - after recording their self-released debut EP - Ben Zephyr felt ready to start touring, but there was yet another lesson to be learned.
“Songwriting has to be the backbone of any band”, suggests August. “So many superb debuts are followed by uninspired and weak sophomore albums, simply because the band never learned the discipline of songwriting. The single most important thing that we learned from Sam Taylor (King’s X, Third Day, Z.Z. Top) when he produced our EP was how to become a band that never quits working on new material. If we hadn’t mastered this skill by the time we start a serious tour, we might never be able to do so.”
After about 40 shows as a new band, Ben Zephyr took an entire year off to fine-tune their sound and to write enough songs for their next two albums. The new material is more colorful, catchy and energetic. Audiences are picking up on the band’s infectious excitement about their new sound. “There’s a growing buzz about our shows. Now we just have to take this band to the next level…”
