Tedd-Z. You love him or you don’t. You can figure him out or you can’t. The tune in question is “Dust on the Decks”. This piece is a tribute to DJInsertYourOwnRandomWordHere (who from now on will be called simply DJ), who died of a heroin overdose.
The music starts out delicately, yet it’s disturbing. The melody starts out with a bell patch playing a haunting melody, soon joined by the drums, then synths, et al. It’s childlike and disturbing. When the piano takes over, I felt a little more calm, but not quite. One thing that bugged me, and yes I know it was intentional, was the very distorted kick drum (or bass patch, I never could really tell). I kept thinking something was wrong with my speakers. The riff in this song never feels like it’s trying to pull the listener along with it. It just is what it is. This is a tribute to an artist who died a senseless death, so I guess I really shouldn’t feel any comfort in it. From a structure standpoint, the music never really goes anywhere. The only change of pace is the sample break by DJ. Then back to the same riff, except with a double-time drum loop now. The production is good and the patches blend well and complement one another. This just isn’t music that I can listen to more than a few times. I’m sure Tedd-Z was creating this from the pain he was feeling, and you can definitely pick up on that. It’s just tough to listen to someone else’s anguish.
