D.L. Gilbert was born February 13, 1977 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Raised in the church, D.L. took a real shining to gospel music and began by playing the drums and soon became widely recognized by churches and gospel groups throughout the city. Prophet D.L. Gilbert actually began playing the drums at the age of two. Yes, two. In his grandmother''''s house (where he was born and raised), he would get two of anything that could be used for drumsticks and start beating on furniture and making makeshift drumsets out of his grandmother''''s what-nots and coffee table and basicly whatever else he could find lying around the house that could produce a percussionistic sound. He was always fascinated with music and anything musical. From the age of four, D.L. would find himself making up songs about anything that he saw, whether a bird flying in the air or a car horn, or a bicycle, or anything that would come to his little creative mind. D.L. was so musically popular in his neighborhood that, at the age of seven or eight, he actually formed a neighborhood band that he called Boss America USA, hence the name of his toy drumset that his great aunt Janie bought him for one Christmas. They had toy guitars, toy keyboards, and the mics that were connected to the speakers in the guitars. Kids from the entire community used to come to his back yard to hear those concerts. Raised in the church all of his life, D.L. had full exposure to the world of gospel music. The music director of their church, at that time, was a man named Jerome Lee Powell. Jerome saw D.L.''''s intrigue for music and took him under his wings, teaching him all that he knew. He started on the drums. D.L. played drums for the church and soon for his uncle''''s gospel group, The Evangelistic Team. The Evangelist Team were very big in their day and that exposed D.L. to a lot of musical avenues. D.L. soon began to play for other gospel groups and choirs. Eventually, after a major transition in their church, D.L. was forced into the position of the church''''s new music director. By then Jerome had only showed D.L. one chord on the keyboard and his brother, Will, was just starting out on the drums. D.L. would play his one chord on the keyboard for every song (fast or slow). He would pray before he played, even as he still does unto this very day. His prayer would always be, "Lord, anoint me and I''''m gonna'''' give You my very best. Take it and use it for Your glory. And when You send it back to me, send it back with an increase." Of course, when the Lord enabled D.L. to go to school and receive formal musical training in reading and writing music, he took advantage of it. D.L. learned more instruments such as guitar, bass, a little sax, harmonica, a little trumpet, and more. Jerome was showing him a few things on the bass before the church split, so that helped also by the time he went to school. In 1995, God gave D.L. Gilbert a vision of what D.L. initially called "The Fort Lauderdale City-Wide Community Choir" at the time. D.L. contests that the Lord had shown him everything from the vocalists to the musicians. D.L. began acting upon what He had shown him and got as far as about twenty-eight voices, two keyboardists, one bass guitarist, one saxaphonist, and two drummers. Later, God dropped the name "The B.F.P. Ensemble" into his spirit. The formal name was The Built For Praise Community Ensemble. They recorded their first album together in 1999 (D.L. Gilbert & The BFP Ensemble "ALRIGHT!"). By the time they recorded their second project in 2001, "HUMBLE ME", the group was down to one soprano, one tenor, one drummer, and D.L. (which filled in as soprano, alto, tenor, and musician). Shortly after, even those faithful few began to become a bit slowful and nonchallant about rehearsals and the group altogether. So, by the later half of 2002, D.L. was trying to birth the second group that God put into his heart, GXM (The Generation X-treme Ministry). D.L.''''s holiday album that December was an audition for the begining stages of GXM. With the formation of GXM, D.L. Gilbert released "DLG PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS MY MUSIC STARRING D.L. GILBERT" the spring of 2003. Then, in 2004 D.L. Gilbert released "THE MUSIC MINISTRY OF D.L. GILBERT", the CD and autobiography, and on November 26, 2004, came his most celebrated work to date, "NEW SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS", the CD and video. Today, D.L. Gilbert stands uncompromised as one of the innovators of Urban Soul Gospel music. D.L. Gilbert is an assistant pastor, author, composer, designer, entertainer, father, husband, musician, performer, preacher, producer, record label CEO, recording artist, and songwriter.
