Mr Midnight (Rock)

Artist Comments
Here's a song off the new album. The song's called Mr Midnight and the album's called 'Valuable Lives.' Both Ivan and I have lost close family members recently; in my case my 25-year-old sister, Ann, to Leukaemia. Hence the album title 'Valuable Lives.' Mr Midnight was written in one of Van Morrison's houses in Killiney in Dublin where Ivan's been doing some work (as a PA, not as a musician.) Story goes that Ivan was up there one day making sure all the faxes had paper, that everything was in order, etc, and the place was empty so Ivan went into the live-room in the house which contains a grand piano, several saxophones and Van's Yamaha APX acoustic. Ivan started strumming the acoustic then started wondering what would happen if Van were to walk in and see him mucking about on the guitar. Given Van's legendary lack of patience, a sacking would be almost inevitable. Could Ivan talk his way out of it? That's when the first few lines of the song came to Ivan: "I'm here talking with Mr Midnight. "Hope the words come out right. "I'm ready for the gift of inspiration to come." Once again, Australian Singer-songwriter Chiara Browne helped us out with the backing vox. Kudos to Chiara. Ivan Patterson; Guitars, Vocals. Mick Synnott; Bass, Drums, Keyboards. Guests: Chiara Browne; Vox. Mick o'Neill; Keyboards. Recorded by Ivan Patterson and Mick Synnott on a Zoom MRS-1044 10-track digital recorder. Produced, Mixed and Mastered by Mick Synnott on a custom-built AMD Athlon-based PC using Sonar Producer 4, T-Racks and WaveLab. Enjoy.

Despite having hacked around on the edges of the music business for over twenty years, neither Ivan nor I have ever made the move into professional musicianship. And although we come from quite a small town, we didn't actually meet face to face until Summer 2003 when we were introduced by a mutual connection. I had just moved back to Ireland after a 14-year stint in London writing code by day, and playing Bass in various bands and producing music in my home studio by night. Somewhat jaded with playing live, I was looking for a studio project; session work or production maybe. Thing is, I'm not much of a writer so I had all these tools at my disposal but no decent material to work with. Ivan had just picked up his guitar after a three-year layoff and found he had quite a lot to say musically. With an ....nal of over 100 tracks, a beautiful guitar style and an immediately recognisable voice, he was all ready to cut a memorable album but he needed a Bass-player, a drum-programmer, someone to do backing vox, produce, engineer, mix and master. He didn't think he'd get the whole package in one person though. Then fate intervened in the form of my neighbour, Ivan's daughter Zoë, choreographer and dancer extraordinaire, who connected us up. It was a match made in studio heaven and the album 'Monster Shoes' is the result. Albums two and three; 'Valuable Lives' and the third as yet unnamed, but mostly recorded, are to follow soon. Enjoy. Mick, Jun 2006.
