John studied Music at Sheffield University where he was taught flute by Paul Chapman and subsequently took lessons from Edward Beckett and David Butt.
As an original member of Steve Hackett's rock band, John regularly toured the USA and Europe, as well as appearing on several of the former Genesis guitarist's records.
Later he became a member of the English Flute Quartet, with Mike Mower, Laurence Joyce and Jon Dodd, appearing with them at the Purcell Room.
May 2000 saw the release of 'Sketches of Satie', an album of compositions by Erik Satie arranged for flute and guitar by John and Steve on Camino Records.
