If anyone else should get this problem THIS will help.

Your profile seems to break and you register a new profile BUT all your links disappear from bookmarks and the toolbar tabs...go to the firefox menu bar and do the following:
file/exit.... (go to the windows star button and...) press start/run and type "firefox.exe -profilemanager" without the quotes and then select the default from the available options...Hey presto your original settings should be back ;o)

It just took me a fe*kin age to work that out...lol
