Ok so it seems there are a few people on here that play guitar other than myself so let's see I'll start from the top & work my way down.
Torquestra: Let me start of by saying that I love flamenco guitar when played well & this song has a very flamenco kinda feel to it but with a modern twist. It sounds like it would fit in well on one of those Nerada modern flamenco compilations. I really like this song it's nothing overly complex but it's well played & moves along nicely. The guitar sound is great also the only thing was I thought there was a bit too much reverb which makes it sound like it's being played in an arena & to me flamenco is the type of music you hear in a small club or bar the music of the people not in an arena. I also thought the finish was a bit sudden but all these things do not anything away from what is a very listenable tune. I'll definitely be checking out more of your stuff.
Lament: My 1st impression was that it takes a little bit of time to get moving, although I suppose it is a 10 minute song (which by the way took me ages to download on a 56k modem!) so an extented intro is kinda expected. It has a very Jeff Buckley kinda haunting feel to it and I'm not a big fan of his. I don't think there's many people that pull of the haunting feel well & I'm not sure if this song actually does pull it off or not. I like the busy drums, the contrast of them against the minimalistic guitar during the slow parts of the song works well i think. I don't like the vocals at all or the thrashy guitars although the change at about the 6 minute mark was kinda interesting. Overall I think this song doesn't know what it wants to be it's not at all catchy & really did nothing for me. I will say though if there are any Jeff Buckley fans out there check this song out you'll probably love it.
Measure of Peace: Let me start of by saying that I'm not a big thrash metal fan I don't mind like the growling/screaming vocals & I don't like thrashy guitar. I feel that a guitar should be played not attacked & abused. When the song started it grabbed my attention I liked the guitar sound but as soon as the vocals started I quickly lost interest. The vocals sound like a guitarist who couldn't find a decent lead singer so they said f**k it i'll do it myself. The double bass drums during the chorus sounded very Metallica-ish as did the palm muted guitar with the downward picking strokes. I thought the production was lacking a bit also.
Flight of the Bumblebee: Let me start of by saying that when I saw you were doing this tune I was always going to compare it to Nuno Bettencourt's version & that's always going to be a hard act to follow. That being said I didn't mind this at all it's not as good as Nuno's version but it's enjoyable. You are definitely a shredder at heart & you do it extremely well. It seems we probably even have some similar influences & I'll also be checking out your version of the Satch classic Surfing with the alien when I get a chance.
Turkish March (Metal): I've always loved this tune it has a great feel to it & it sounds like you had a blast playing it. The thrash metal drumming keeping time with you just cracked me up! The fact that you can play this tune proves that your quite a capable axeman it took me ages to perfect this tune myself but I love playing it. If you ever get a chance get your hands on the version of this song played by OZ guitarists Tommy & Phil Emmanuel (it's on an album called Terra Firma) they play it on acoustic guitars & it works real well.
Side note: Tommy Emmanuel is now signed to Steve Vai's Favoured Nations label. Somebody sent him a copy of Tommy's album & he was so impressed that he signed him up to distribute his C.D's outside of Australia so you know he's good if Steve Vai was impressed
Turn Signal: Funky would be the best way to describe this tune I love the sax in this tune more so than the guitar actually. I didn't really like the guitar sound you were using don't know what it is about it. I like your style of playing but fusion Jazz sometimes loses track of the theme of the songs which happened a couple of times on this track. I like this song but I don't love it, I'm not sure if it will grow on me the more I listen to it or if it will start grating. Time will tell I suppose...
Well that's it for now I look forward to hearing more it seems that there's quite a bit of talent going around on this site. By the way if anyone wants to review any of my 2 tracks feel free
Cheers,
Theo
