What are your recommendations on creating your own CD covers (artwork and jewel cases) and banners please?
 
I know that photoshop is one good source, but I'm looking for others.

apart from that.... some of the software you get with printers and cd programes are pretty good....epson printing software with my printer is pretty good... paintshop pro is also fun and easy 2 use

i use autodesk 3d studio max and maya for 3d stuff..adobe CS2 for tweaks..there are a few in my image library and a few more on my intelligenazia and blue mushroom mice pace pages..have a gander

There is also a few very good alternatives to Paintshop called paint.NET and GIMP, google them, they are free and actually very good. Gimp has some great scripts not to mention you can make your own. I found tons of scripts online and even one for light sabres! lol No, im not a Star Wars fan but they are good fun when messing with it! lol
 
EDIT: Heres the links just incase your lazy like me and a few spelling mistakes!
 
Gimp (Not sure if you still need gtk runtime for it too work)
