I see Al Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize.

I don't much follow US politics -- is he a 'good guy' ?

...at any rate, considering the US is the butt of much criticism these days, I reckon you Americans ought to be proud of this one -- congratulations !

( for his work on publicizing climate change, for those of you who haven't seen that )

I'm afraid the nobel commity made a mistake this year... Al Gore is a great media guy and has made a great effort in making people aware of the climate change...

However his view in the role that mankind plays in the climate change is i.m.o. a little (read completely) overrated. Climate change is a natural fenomenon that seems to correlate perfectly with sunbursts etc... This doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything about our CO2 emissions and energy resources ! That debate needs to be held. And we need to adress these issues.

But Al Gore is way overrated.

Hans.

hey drainage, not sure if you happened to see his documentary, but he shows graphs that show the rise of co2 emissions correlates exactly with the rise of global temperature.

I must admit I haven't watched his movie. But the same graph can be produced in respect to the sunbursts. This graph can be produced for the ice ages etc and there seems to be a very close correlation.

I'm not saying our co2 emissions aren't a problem (they are a HUGE problem).... of course they are a huge problem. But the problem seems to be way bigger than just the co2 emissions.

Therefore it's a good thing that the IPCC (the intergovernmental panel on climate change) also recieved the prize. I had rather seen them getting the prize and Al Gore just sticking to his Oscar....

Not too long ago I was at a lecture of a dutch scientist that takes place in the IPCC and it was his story that convinced me to look at it with a more open mind.

Nobel Prize on climate change : all for it ! Nobel Prize for Al Gore : not so much.

agrees with drainage on this one - co2 emissions are .033 % of total greenhouse gases - very small - and scientists are not unanimous on causes of climate change -  however that said would be nice to replace fossil fuels altogether with something thats truely friendly to the environment and the climate is indeed changing and we need to face that squarely in any case...
Al Gore - seems like an ok guy but anyone in American politics at that level is dirty imo - just the nature of the beast.

And the Nobel awards are always political even when deserved...

you may be right that he is undeserving, but there is no doubt that his efforts really did flash this subject into our daily language.  It's undeniable that he played a huge role in the public knowledge of the subject.
