Ottogono  News
To Hull And Back (24th September 2004) (Sunday, October 10, 2004)
We recently did a gig in Hull with a great bunch of guys that go by the name of Ernest, the reception that we recieved from 'The Adelphi' and the people that frequent the venue was awesome. They made us feel really welcome. The next paragraph tells you what they thought of us. The lead singer Ferris is permanently on another planet, from his bizarre chest beating and legs akimbo it was very hard not to be taken by this slightly strange Gallagheresque front man.
Ottogono are a spirited bunch hailing from Coventry, they certainly gave a good account of themselves. They name Led Zeppelin, The Jam and Kula Shaker as their influences odd bedfellows. They have been going for twelve months and have played in Coventry, Birmingham and of course Hull.
The songs came thick and fast oozing class and obvious talent, enough attitude to shake a tambourine at. The rest of the band was far more serious with straight faces and a look of grim determination fixed on their emotionally bereft faces. Ferris, crazy as a matchbox full of melons, gritted his teeth at the start of one of the more super-charged songs. Drug-fuelled and spiky it kicks in and then by god does it roar. It's the one with the very abrupt rock n roll ending. Jon, one of the aforementioned serious guys traded places with the lead-singer. He looked like a painter and decorator I used to know from the Spring Bank area. With a deeper voice and far more melodic gentle feel the Paul Weller influences were plain to see. In fact with the crowds volume increasing by the second, these mellower than mellow tracks were somewhat lost in the din. The highlight of this part of the show was a track called Sailing which was gruff and forthright, a lively number by the deep throat vocal stylings of Jon. Then, just by way of a change and to show versatility, they threw in a bass/drum duet that had some damn funky time signature .... going on. With full-on attitude and angst; mad Ferris head thumping like there's no tomorrow this likely bunch of lads put on a ballsy show. Scream baby Scream.
