A genre that is not what I would usually go out of my way to listen to, but taken on its own terms this is actually very good indeed in all aspects: the performance, the production, the songwriting are all top drawer. Mary has a wonderful voice that’s rich and powerful and capable of drawing the emotion out of every line. It’s not clear what Mary plays on the song, but every part of the arrangement is flawless, especially the piano playing which is superb. (I’m guessing from the mix that that’s Mary’s instrument of choice.) The recording quality is excellent, too – it certainly doesn’t sound like it has been recorded in a spare bedroom, and I’m guessing a studio recording – but I think the vocal does sound ever so slightly hyped. I think a voice as good as this would be better served by a more natural sound processing.

The song itself, and especially the lyrics are a bit too saccharine for my tastes, but then I’m kind of twisted like that, and we’re talking personal taste. They do stray uncomfortably close to cliché at times, and some of the images are a bit contradictory in places, but the mood and the feeling come across strongly and fit the melody and the genre well.

So while this is something that I might not necessarily buy myself, I think there are a lot of people who would, and those people would be very satisfied indeed with their purchase. Excellent.
