After the surprise You Left Me (a collab with Greybrow I reviewed last month), I must admit to looking forward to this to see if what had happened on You Left Me had translated to his own material. I am mighty pleased to report that it has indeed and done so on what to my mind is one of the best Slippy T tracks I have heard for a good long while. That may well have to do with the fact that it's as funky as ferk with rhythms that do your head in - oh and it's a kinda Rebirth overdose, which definitely gets my boats afloat.
Like a great many of us I have been inspired by Rebirth in it's many guises, but not so gung-ho with the evolutionary leap that became Reason. For some, Reason is the digs danglies, but give me the ease of use and sheer weirdness of sound that is so recognisably Rebirth any time. Mr Rob Taylor (aka The Slipped One) puts this to the best possible use on Chewin On it, cooking up an electronic vortex that whisks the listener into it's heart before you can shout fornication. Once there, of course, you forget the mad does of panic and realise just how tasty this thing really is. Forget chewing on the damn thing, gulp it down...
Oooerr, missis.....
The main thing about You Left Me that impressed me was Slippy's change of vocal tone. Yep he of the Treacle Tonsils has become Mr Raucous in his old bionic age and boy is it effective. Not to denigrate Greybrows work on You Left Me but this is a whole new side to Rob and one that fascinates me. That harder edge is also a great selling point for Chewing On It showing that Rob has developed his vocal muscles along with some enhanced songwriting skills. I've always been into this guy as a lyricist and Chewin On It has some classic examples of what this guy is best at. All of which, it has to be said, adds up to a terrifically exciting track that should add even more lustre to this excellent MP3 Unsigned artist.
A Must Have.
