I’ve been a fan of The Foreboding’s music since I first heard it. However, I’ll try to be objective :-)
As is typical with Jon’s material, his gorgeous guitar picking and strumming dominates the track. Without a clearly defined verse – chorus format, the track ambles along very pleasantly, picking you up and taking you along with it, before setting you down again gently at the end.
I find Jon’s lyrics intriguing and sad, and yet somehow never depressing. There’s a relaxed, philosophical quality in Jon’s voice that gives a sense that the hard times are just a part of a cycle of ups and downs in one’s lifetime – and there’s a richness in his vocabulary and imagery that includes you in the journey, or sends you off on one of your own making.
I like the balance of the guitars and piano, though I felt that the panned rhythm guitar, and occasionally the percussion was a smidge too far to the front and the vocals just a too far to the back, but that may just be my personal preferences coming out. Also, being very picky indeed, there’s a little pop at 1.38 and a couple more between 2.45 and 2.48 – I’m not sure if that’s an issue with the track itself or just the uploading here onto the site.
I hadn’t played this track often until I came to review it, but it’s a song that stands up to repeated listens and has grown on me as I’ve got to know its subtleties.
I gather Jon’s planning on re-visiting it soon. I’m looking forward to hearing what he does with it … excellent work.
