The first MP3 Unsigned artist I am reviewing this month is a guy I've known forever. Rob Taylor aka Slippy T and I have knocked around many of the same websites for years and in that time he has become a firm favourite of mine. He's also a nice, regular bloke and as we all know that helps a lot around here. It also helps if you have a USP (Unique Selling Point) and Slippy has one of them in his vocal delivery and intonation. Put simply, there isn't anyone around who sounds like this guy either in the music he releases or in the style of his vocal delivery. Often a blend of soul and blue jazz, Slippy's tonsils have adorned more collaborations than anyone other than the collaboration king - funnily enough another long time Slippy friend the Mighty Mezzer.
The first 20 seconds of Torn Away will convince you to listen further, and the electronic jiggery pokery that ensues after that will ensure you will make your way through this very rhythmic ambient (?) electronica track. For the first time in ages, Torn Away is that rare thing; almost a Slippy T instrumental. As much as I like to him to vent vocally, I also have developed a long standing liking for his soft, breezy musical style. For me, as good as the vocal is on this track - and it is that, especially the choral sections - it's the music that finally brings home the bacon. It's flow and adaption are seamless, it's mild pulse as deceptive as a rip tide.
As one of the leading lights over at MP3 Unsigned it would only be natural for him to get a tad more attention than most, but Torn Away also shows that the attention is more than deserved. Ultimately, what defines Slippy as being different to a lot of the artists is his longevity. Having a back catalogue of tracks shows the determination to do it his own way, and also perfectly illustrates his committment to deliver great songs time and time again. The one charge that could never be leveled at this artist is that he doesn't work his nuts off getting it right, and Torn Away is as right as I've ever heard it.
Most Highly Recommended.
