I would have to be ear blind to not know of Mr Slippy T.

What makes this guy tick?

 He is prolific as hell. I think this guy could write a song a day. While some people take vitamins to get going Slippy T writes a new song.

What about those songs?

Solid song writing from a solid song writer. He is consistent and interesting in his approach.

Bottom end is always important ( I bet he is a bass player ).  Retro synth sounds from the 80s ( I bet he played in some London new wave bands in 1984 ) Understands drama. (He probably did all the voices in cassette books for children ).  The big build up. ( He has probably dreamt all of his life to play the cymbals in the London Philharmonic Orchestra ) Dynamics. ( His tunes always have more push and shove than the Paris metro. ) Layering vocal harmonies are always important. ( I bet he loves the Eagles for their harmonies. ) Concept of orchestration.

An accomplished instrumentalist. He has managed to take the best from the eighties and blend it with today’s sounds.

I am going to review one song “TORN AWAY”.

Positive points;

Interesting intro ( Where did he find those strange sounds ? )  This song chills in a nervous sort of way.. The song builds before the chorus kicks in with full background harmonies. The lyrics are strongly emotional and direct. The hook has a strong melody and beat. The hook makes this song rock.

Not so positive points;

We are not talking commercial here. This song is to listen to not to sing along to.

Slippy has an interesting voice but he also seems to be afraid to let anyone really hear it. I would lighten up on the reverb on the main vocal and use a more intimate singing style on this song. More upfront. The background vocals sometimes take more place than the lead and that is not a good thing.

Lyrically Slippy always has different ideas than your average songwriter. That in itself is fresh and original but some lines seem forced. I would like to suggest a little trick that I use. I look at the line and read it backwards to see if it fits both ways. Crazy but it works to turn a line around on itself. I also sometime put a line into an internet translator and translate English to English. Interesting results there !

Do these lines ring a bell Mr Slippy?

Breathe that breath
Rising like the crest of a  wave  in your chest
 understand what you feel
your ears caressed by traitor’s words

And still

Tears are real and warm and felt
 life turns a spinning wheel

Holding on to a fool’s dream
like battles won before the fight

Yet letting go would give too much

And free the morning from the night
shattered hopes, promises shared

Fickle is love

 No prisoners spared

Ok a bit Shakespearean but it is just an example.

I am waiting for the ultimate Slippy T vocal. Clear, just a little reverb to enhance the emotion he is capable of expressing with his wonderful voice.

It is extremely hard to review someone as talented and seasoned as Mr Slippy T. I suggest you check his music out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed!
