Well coming up here is my 3rd review out of the people who first came into my offering post for a review. I have to say I’m very pleased with the results so far. We have Pidgman’s latest; Babylon Is Doomed?. So without further due to you all… Lets begin!

The first thing that gets thrown out at me is the snare. Very powerful and full. I like it a lot. The kick has a nice pumping beat to it and the guitar gives a very vibrant and bright feeling to the song. The effect seems to give it a chorus type sound to it. I like the synths and such in the background. Very nice hollow sound to them.

The background synth is a very different appeal from his other works. I do like it. It sounds like a nice rendition of an 80’s instrument. It bongs and gongs into a harmony with the ah’s, which are a very nice addition to the detail of the song. They mesh perfectly together and make me feel so relaxed..

I’ve always liked Craigs voice. It is a bit whiney but with the type of instruments he uses, it sounds very good. The tone he makes is very harmonizing and it sooths you within. It’s the type of voice that lets you know he’s in it for the pure soul, joy and emotion of making music. You don’t find that in a lot of places.

After the last verse I hear the guitar stop and the instruments slowly fade away. I usually don’t like fade away endings but this one was done right. I use them myself at times as well but Craig definitely pulled it off. Very awesome effort on his part! The performance was a good one. I would have to say this would be up there with one of my favorites produced by him. I’m going to go right ahead and give performance a 9. The guitar and the synth with the ah’s are a very nice touch. His voice is soothing and the bass line aids his voice tremendously. It really makes it sound good!

Since we’re on the subject of the voice. I’m going to be honest. It’s not my favorite kind of tone but Craig does know how to sing. I can see that he’s very tone efficient and knows what notes go where and when. Which brings me to the lyrics! There is so much I could write about Babylon, it’s not even funny. But when you bring everything down to a basic understanding… I think that Craig is totally right. Babylon was and IS doomed. That place died long ago but the actual land it sits on as well, Iraq, could be very much doomed. “Could”. It pretty much is now… but… ah, I won’t get into it. This is Craig’s song, man! Basically he’s right. It is doomed. Very well thought out lyrics. I will give them a 9. Only reason for the missing 10 is that it was a very well thought out lyric but I would have to say that I would have liked to hear more about why Babylon is doomed. Not for information purposes (“look around” gives that notion) but mainly for more change in the song. No biggy!

I very much enjoyed the song. It was uplifting and brightening even though it’s about something being doomed. Kind of an ironic sound. One of those, “well everything turned to crap but it’ll be alright cuz you’re still alive” songs. To me it wasn’t about the atmosphere. It was about the emotion. And that’s what grabbed me. I liked the feeling and sensation I got from the song. Which was a very relaxing one. I appreciate relaxation so I would give enjoyment a good 8. There could have been more changes and more power. Everything was all good, though. Awesome sensation.

My interest level pretty much stayed the same. But it did decline a smidge. Like I’ve said before in other comments and my last review… I pay a lot of attention to detail and alterations. It had alterations in it. It did! The clap line was a good solid line but that’s just what it was. Solid. Maybe more fills with them or more changes to the sound quality. They were heard but I think more time could be spent on them to make them stand out more. If not more changes… the sound could make a big difference! They gave the feel of the song a very 80’s state of mind along with the guitar FX and the synth. They all inhaled and exhaled the smoke of the 80’s. The claps could have done a LOT to bring that out. Interest gets an 8. I liked the subject of the song!

A lot of people who are good at making music have very good song structure. Sure some may not know all the tricks of the trade to get a strong mix but at least they know how to make a song. Craig is not without any exception. He knows how to structure songs. He’s good at writing music. Very, very good, in fact. This song gave me the impression that it may need more support with the verses but the verses were in the right spot at the right times. The alterations may have taken my ability to give a solid 10 away. But that doesn’t mean Craig can’t make a song. I think he did a marvelous job! Which is why I gave a 9.

Structure is one thing but making what gives the song structure is another. The melody. I liked the melody in this song. The 4 note quality to the synth was a very soothing and it wasn’t annoying or out of place. I’m going to give it a nice 9. There’s not really anything more he could have done to it. The guitar melody was good. The bass line was good. Everything about the ah’s just enters my soft side. I just can’t get over how simple it seemed. Very well thought out, though! Lack of more fills could have been avoided by playing chess with the melody arrangement but that doesn’t take away the strong relaxation I got from it! Ahhhh. Soothing.

Subwoofers are a great thing to have. They tell you all about the language of the lows and they make the kicks and drums stand out a tremendous amount. As far as production and recording goes. I think they can definitely make or break the recording quality. Now the vocals: Noooooo problem. They sounded great! The snare: AWESOME! I cradled that snare in my arms quite literally, haha! The guitar was recorded slightly faded. But the effects fixed that right up. No problems there. The synth sounded very soothing with the Ah’s. The claps seemed a bit faded to me but the clap talk is over with. What got me was the kick. It was there but I couldn’t hear it as well as I would have liked to. Which brings me back to the subwoofer. I have one. Some don’t. That can make a huge difference when production comes into play. Also in listening! To me, they are essential If I have a production setup that has no subwoofer but the kick sounds fine… It won’t on another that uses one. I talk wayyy to much. I mean, seriously. I do. My main point is that the kick needs more oomph. “We need more powlerd, captain!” Giving that kick some more time would really please me a lot! I’ll give recording quality a good 7. It’s a lot better then what I’ve heard Craig make in the past. Vast improvement. *grabs snare and runs off! *

Commercial appeal! “What do we have for him, Johnnyyyyyy?” Well I think that if the kick and claps were fixed, the song could sell. Could. I don’t know how far Craig wants to go. It seems like he just wants to have fun. But if I did see this as a selling point, I don’t’ think it would go far. Playing the song in a bar would be the best place for this. A nice fun sing along song to keep the people happy. That’s what I think about towards this song when I think about commercial appeal. For that I give it a 7. It’s a great, wonderful song but it needs to go further to make money. If Craig were right here in my room next to me, I’d give him a great big handshake!
