Scott Slater – Seventh Heaven
Anyone familiar with Scott’s music here on MP3unsigned will undoubtedly know by now that the standard of this mans work is second to none. In all departments, from composition to production his dedication to his craft shines through with a truly dazzling brilliance.
Seventh Heaven is the latest offering, and what a remarkably apt title that is, for this track transcends the mundane and sends one’s musical heart souring into esoteric and etheric realms. Lyrically capturing that essence of ambition, desire and longing in an enchanting narrative magically weaved into this wonderfully catchy composition, yet allowing us enough freedom for our minds to engage in all kind of personal reverie.
From the opening few bars which hook us right in and which will make this classic track immediately recognisable for years to come, we are gifted with the hypnotic and rhythmic reggae-esque beat that sets the stage and prepare us expectantly for the story that is about to unfold. Leading us invitingly into Scott’s unmistakeable vocals. And what a vocal performance this is. There are truly not enough superlatives that would do credit to this artists talent. Every note and intonation, every harmony and solo, provide a shear breathtaking fantasy of what can only be described as magnificent majesty. This is undoubtedly a performance and indeed a whole package that sits very comfortably with the greats of this genre. Let us be clear, this is no hotch potch demo, this truly is a pop classic and deserves that accolade.
Don’t be fooled, however, In thinking that Scott is some one trick pony. For all departments dazzle with a natural sublime quality, be it lyrically or musically. And a trip through his recent catalogue will not only delight but surprise.
It is said that some people are born with greatness and others have greatness thrust upon them, clearly Scott belongs to the former. For this kind of musical craftsmanship cannot be learned wholesale. The ability to construct and deliver such a moving and sweet song yet with an absolute commercial appeal can be found in no text book. The talent to break a heart or paint a smile by the simple inflection of a single note is a gift few will ever realise, yet it is a gift this man possesses in some measure.
My fervent hope is that Scott Slater’s music is heard by the vast audience it demands, and with the forthcoming Album ‘Badeye’ on the horizon, who knows what further treasures are in store. But for now let us be grateful for the tracks delivered to date that leave us all, truly in Seventh Heaven. Amen
