Okay, most people that know me on this site know that I'm quite 'anal' about production and recording.... I've reviewed some tracks in the past and there's always a lot to complain in that area ...then this comes along....
Man, does this track pull open a can of 80's feelings for me ! It starts of with tha plectrum played bassguitar and a up tempo blondie like drumbeat. Those drums sound harsh ! bit of reverb on there and quite some compression ! The doubled vox are mixed very well into the thrack. They could do with a little less reverb in my opnion (throughout the track). There are sooo many sounds in this track, from soft gliding arps to cutting saw leads and then when you think you've heard it all there are some pizzicato strings in there tucked away nicely between the distorted guitar and a soft sine arp.
This guys vocal performance is outstanding. Aswell as the recording and production of it, except for that reverb... but that's a matter of taste.
Song structure is great aswell. This song is basically built up with two chords, with a small but functional detour in the bridge. Simplicity in it's most functional form. The unique vocal line makes sure that it doesn't become dull or even boring. At the same time you start humming along with the vocals the 3rd time you hear the song.
I don't know who did the mixing and post production on this baby, but if Dirk is capable of all this by himself... then what is he still doing on MP3unsigned ?
I recommend everybody to check this track out, even if this 80's pop feel is not your thing.
Listen and learn.
Hans.
