According to Tedd-Z’s biography his particular blend of “edgy electro nonsense” is prone to causing (amongst other things) carpal tunnel syndrome, halitosis and homosexuality at weekends. I’ll let you know (as I write it’s still only Tuesday)…
The track starts with some new-age sounding pan pipes and the crashing waves of the sea. I’m getting an overwhelming feeling of having just entered one of those hippy shops which sell “semi-precious” stones, dream catchers and jossticks. Just as I’m about to turn on my heel and abandon the shop assistant to her tie-dyed misery, the flow is broken by some interesting acoustic percussion on an instrument I’d be able to identify if I was talented in that area… (possibly a glockenspiel?). Hot on the heels of our mystery instrument the beat arrives, whilst the pan pipe thing holds the main theme. It’s engaging and smooth, so I hang around for a while and begin to have a poke through the scented candles. Suddenly the tune takes on a spookier air at around the minute mark and things are starting to get really interesting, causing me to drop the irritating “bloke in a shop” side-plot and resume the mantle of a serious reviewer. This new theme helps develop a darker undertone to balance the lightness of the opening sequence.
There are a couple of subsequent nice breakdowns and all the swirling, swooshy things and clanky percussion bits-and-bobs you’d expect from such a slice of new-age electronica (sorry but I don’t have a clue about the technical side of this genre, as you by now should have realised). As a strong plus, the production seems to a professionally high quality. But, do I really like the track? Well, I guess the problem I have with a lot of this genre is I have absolutely no idea what to do when I listen to it. Rock I can bounce around to, shaking my fist in the air; full-on dance music I can throw shapes about a bit until I get sweaty and slightly odorous; opera, I can sit there looking at my watch, waiting for the interval (total philistine, sorry). I guess this is more relaxing music I’d put on in the background for a chilled mood late at night or that I’d really, properly listen to, appreciating the smooth production, clever panning and whatnot. So sure I like it, and I’d listen to it again at a later date, which is always a good sign.
So, make up your own minds. Is it edgy? Is it nonsense? Does it make you swing both ways on a Saturday night? The choice is yours…
