Sedici Anni (Elements Part 1) by MD-1 Project

 

Oh my, oh my where to start on writing a few wordies on the distorted musical craziness that is MD-1 Project.

 

Firstly I must point out that this is the second, (or is it now the third), outing for this track with it being released recently in its pre-production state in order to gain feedback, advice, critique & support from fans of MD-1 Project on Mp3Unsigned.com.  It actually reached top spot in the ‘Official Mp3Unsigned Charts’, with over 38 ratings, numerous comments & 30 downloads to date in it’s original form.

 

Now, I’ve been reliably informed by Ricky Mancini, the freakbeat experimentalist & musical genius behind MD-1 Project, that this is his final full production release & he wont be ‘tweaking it around’ anymore (my words not his, so we’ll wait & see eh lol).

I’m not going to dwell on the technicalities of production (mainly because I’m crap at that sort of thing), but instead try to tell you what I feel this song is instead.

 

‘Sedici Anni’, (the Italian for ‘Sixteen Years’), is a totally absorbing almost spiritual piece of electronic ambience featuring an amazingly mystical sounding Cello played by Deryn Yuill, (a name I’ve never come across before so I can’t inform more at this stage).

 

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Ricky has carefully constructed the beats, rhythm & synthesised instrumentation completely around the cello & it works wonderfully, creating a spatial ambience that leaves one feeling mesmerised by the complexity & diversity of the sounds he’s used to accompany it.

 

The opening synths & baselines are hauntingly moody, presenting us with a gloomy darkness before, almost a minute & a half later, lifting us from those dark depths by commencing the main rhythm of the piece with the shakers & bongos beginning a relentless pursuance of the aforementioned cello.  They begin chasing it along at a merry rate prior to the haunting inception of a (very live sounding ?) Saxophone.  This Sax holds the listener mesmerised in a smoky haze by its rise & fall whilst the strings craftily sneak up on us attempting to take us back down into gloomy depths to be held captive in an ever increasing aural whirlwind of sound.

With this piece MD-1 Project allows us to experience the amazing transference of control between darkness & light, become captivated by wild whirling winds & before relaxing us back into the calm stillness of night. He cossets us in a totally hypnotic cacophony of sound before spitting us back out into the real world where we are left to wander alone, wanting, almost needing, to return to the strange enchanting world of mystical delights that is Sedici Anni.
