The Foreboding, Jon. I came across 'You Should Know' by chance. Just recently joining MP3unsigned.com, I was browsing the artists. Listening to artists whose name caught my fancy. Such is how I found The Foreboding, and noticed 12 comments and the 9.5 rating and thought I'd give it a listen. Since then, I have listened to 'You Should Know' around 30 times. I know with the new review system, 9's and 10's are discouraged, except for the truly deserving. With all my heart, this rating is deserved. This is one of the most well written songs, lyrically and musically, I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. I could give you no other names of song writers who could use the word 'nettle' (def-[n] any of numerous plants having stinging hairs that cause skin irritation on contact) in a song so perfectly. Relationships often make a person wonder 'Why do I stay?' Endless chances can be given to a significant other, in hopes they will change for the better of the relationship. A promise from someone you love can make you believe they will, even if heard over and over again. Friends and family, never short of opinion, tell you they will never change. We cannot see the wisdom, and sometimes find offense to the accusastion of such warnings. You know in your head they are right, but, the heart refuses to accept it. This song describes these feelings as eloquently as one could.
The beautiful picking of the acoustic and subtle accompaniment of strings, perfectly introduce and follow the softly sung lyrics. Jon's voice has tremendous depth and graceful delivery. The emotion is felt from the first through the final words.
I have only one issue with Jon, the name. The Foreboding, as webster defines-foreboding-[n]-expectation of misfortune. If one would view the name, and expect misfortune, they would be greatly relieved. I find myself most fortunate to have found this song. It truly is a masterpiece. It is well received now, and I believe would have been equally well received in the times of the Renaissance. This song should sit proudly next to similiar classics such as: Greensleeves, Diamonds and Rust (Joan Baez), Solitude (the most shockingly beautiful song Black Sabbath has written). And Jon, I know Leonard Cohen is listed as an influence of yours, I love his music and lyrics as well. You can hear the influence in this song. I'll tell you what though, my wife screams like a banshee when I put on my old Leonard Cohen albums. She had no such response to your voice. This song is on the same level lyrically and musically, except you have a great voice for this song. No offense to Leonard intended. She can't tolerate any of my Tom Waits albums, after his voice changed either. The only reason a 7 was given for commercial appeal, is some of the listening public seems not to appreciate the songs I do (ie--Tom and Leonard). If I owned a radio station, it would be on it. If you take the time to listen, I believe you will find 'You Should Know', one of the most enjoyable songs you will hear.
