Review #2 from me for MSL. I have to admit, ...hmm...admit what....I think i liked the previous song I reviewed much better, not that this one is bad, it is done very well, but I just find it's very generic for it's genre. It does have alot of nice sounds, and is mixed very well, crisp clean and very easy to listen to, here are some of the problems I have with this track.
1)- I find that there is not enough ambience where there should be, in
the sections without the back beat, it sounds too compressed to me, no
dynamic range, just one big wall of sound, as I listen to this I am
reminded of Robert Miles or even Delerium, both who have done similar
pieces but maintained an element of dynamics during the softer parts
where this track doesn't, just hits you and stays there.
2)- when the main drums come in, one of the synth pads in the
background seem to be off key with the main melody for one or two notes
in the phrase, not sure where it is, or what it is, but something just
doesn't sound right.
And that's it for problems I Have with this track, now on to the things I like about this track.
1)- Consistent. The melody is strong, very strong, carries well through
the entire song, soft soothing melody with a powerhouse back beat
sounds good to me. The piano is my favourite instrument in this,
consistent in sound and velocity, volume, everything, perfect.
2)- Production. Other than the lack of dynamic range, I find this track
is produced exceptionally well, everything is clean and crisp, nothing
really gets muddy, at least not on my monitors. All the different
instruments blend well together, and I can hear most of what happens
all the way through, well done.
3)- Structure. As I said earlier, this does seem somewhat generic to me
for it's genre, reminds me of Fable from Robert Miles, which is a
wonderful comparison, being able to remind me of somethging that good
is a decent thing.
I don't want anyone to think that this is a bad review, or that I
didn't like the song, I like it very much, it's a very strong track in
it's place. The desire to help point out things that may need work is
always a difficult thing to ponder when others art is concerned, so
having said that, it is just that.
Great piece for it's genre, I recommend it
