Hashish To Ashes
Quietly pleased as one of my songs, Hashish To Ashes, got to the semifinals of the UK Songwriting Contest. It's the first time I've ever entered a contest for songwriting rather than for performance so I was dead chuffed.Somehow though, I'm not expecting Simon Cowell to be camping on my doorstep! So now it's back to the grindstone to work on new song ideas. I've been playing in Brittany and Ireland this summer and it's good to be home and have time on my hands. Still learning the mandolin too - bluegrass style at the moment.
I got so sick of hanging around dingy and drab recording studios and not getting the result I wanted (limited choice round whereI live) that I went out and bought one of those wee beastie home recorders. After taking the manual to an expert in gobbledegook for translation; leaving a few toothmarks in the console and kicking the thing around a bit I came up with Cruel Coincidence. The song was mastered by Dominique Brethes at Wolf Studios in London without my having battle with train, Tube and traffic. This internet maalarkey is so civilised - it makes life so much simpler.
I found this old live tape recording covered with dust bunnies, sheltering in a dark recess, so I recorded it to PC and uploaded it. Bit of hiss at the beginning and has a raw 'street' quality but comments are welcome. As for you, Marie, hope this takes you back to your days in the Dublin chemist shop!
I'll be putting a new song on the site in the next few days. Someone emailed me from Dublin to ask about a song she heard me sing when I was busking in Grafton Street in 2000. She could remember the melody but not the words. The song is called 'Heart of Mine' and Ive found the original tape recording and it still sounds good. (Takes me right back, Marie .... and I do remember you and your friends dancing in the chemists's window where you worked! - and thanks for the pennies)Fingers crossed it will still sound good when it's transferred to the site. Hope you like it. Thanks for all the listens and downloads. Cheers Jet
