I'm nearly 46 years old and just figured out why there is so much corruption in this world (Damn, I'm slow).  CRIME PAYS and law enforcement doesn't enforce laws - unless you p*ss them off.  Well that's what I tried to do this "Sleepless Night".

We've all seen the internet scams from Nigeria or some UK lottery right?  Well I got a new one a couple of weeks ago.  I haven't felt like singing, can't write, lost my safety net in an investment supposed to prosper with volitility and have been out of work for 8 months so my curiosity nagged at me to play along.

Someone contacted me saying he saw my profile on a website I registered with for placement as a movie extra and wanted to pay me $1100 to pose for a fashion shoot one day.  Yeah right.  So I played along, waiting for an indication of the scam.  A week or two went by with regular communication and instruction on this project.  Then it finally came.  He's going to send me a partial payment of $450 plus studio costs that I was then to deposit in my bank and immediately wire the remaining $1500 to the shoot supervisor.  I gave him my friends mail service address and waited for the check.

First thing I did is investigate the "sponsor" who wrote the check, the person whom I was instructed to wire the money and law enforcement channels.  As soon as the bank opened, I verified the check was bogus.  I called the legitimate organization whose name was on the check to get a recording that 1000's of people all over the world got burned.

But that's not why I'm ranting.  I called the police and FBI to find they had no intention of arresting the asshole.  They are far too busy - looking for midnight tokers I guess - to solve actual crimes against others.  The bitch who answered the phone told me I was on my own.  I told her I lost my confidence in law enforcement, hung up on her and complained to the Department of Justice - as if anyone there gives a sh*t!

No wonder I went out of business doing mortgages.  I didn't break the law or deceive borrowers.  No wonder people spend so much time designing elaborate hoaxes to cheat people out of money.  It's the only way to acquire any real cash.

LAW ENFORCEMENT DOESN'T CARE (no offense to individuals but the system sucks)!  They are all engaged in making sure motorists have their seat belt buckled.  It's a lot easier to pull people over for driving 5 over than it is to solve crime and they get paid the same either way.  Why not take the easy way out?

It's times like these I wonder why I even try to make a positive difference in the world - in the business world, in music, in my interactions with others.  Why bother?

Yeah, I know that Mark.  Quack, quack.

That's what I told my prospective mortgage clients who fell for the 1.99% option arms at other lenders and are now homeless, whimpering about how they were fooled.  What I'm outraged about is the apathy of law enforcement.  I didn't lose any money or expect to gain by the scam.  But I did expect law enforcement to take action.

Apathy of everyday people is the down-fall of man kind.

Man I hate those interent scam artists. I got burned years ago when I was in college on a multi-level marketing plan - which everyone now knows is a wolf in sheeps clothing but at the time it sounded totally legit. I went after the guy at the top and discovered he was doing it again with a new plan so I made a webpage with his name and the product details all over it with lots of meta tags and text in white (back when you could get away with it)that put it in the top three on the search engine for that particular search - right beside his website. I exposed him badly and posted all of the emails. The f**ker threatened me with all sorts of things so I invited him to get on a plane and fly to Dublin so he could find out exactly the type of guy he was messing with (I'm a tough bastard, 6ft 6" with 20 years martial arts experience). Of course that was the end of that, never heard from him again and his scam crashed and burned. Then again, I'm certain the prick set up again and used a different name but at least I messed up that plan.
I've seen some hilarious clips on the tv (probably all over youtube) where these guys get the Nigerian scammer sto take photos of themselves with newpapers showing the date doing stupid things just to prove they are serious.
Speaking of the FBI - I got this awfull spam email in before with pics of kids in it... no idea where they got my details from. So I emailed a whole load of abuse back to them which was the wrong thing to do becuase that verified my address and they kept emailing me terrible stuff daily. I contacted the FBI  interent child abuse section daily along with Interpol, forwarded them all the detials of the emails, links and IP addresses but I never got a single reply. Eventually the only thing I could do was dump my email address. What a disgrace.
I also nearly got burned buying a $+2000 guitar on Ebay. Found out who he was through the Ebay forum and googled his name to discover he owned a music shop, there was a write up from a local newspaper on his page. So, I called the newspaper and then emailed them all of the emails etc and told them they were promoting a scammer. Then I got hold of his dad through the local business directory. Eventually the money was refunded after I got onto the local sheriffs department and had him struck off EBay.
Anyway, when it comes to the web I don't believe anything anymore. I take great joy in tracking bastards like that down and messing with them. Those free geocities sites are great for exposing people on a quick and easy to make website.
Sorry for the rant but your email started the fire in my belly again! I hate internet scammers!!

If you, like me, enjoy wasting scammers time by playing them at their own game and entertaining yourself in the process, google for 419 Baiting and get yourself a laugh at their expense.

It sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It's an old saying but, particularly with 'net scams, it's true. It only takes a modicum of intelligence to see through their sh*t but sadly some people in the world don't have that and end up paying heavily for it.
