    Posted: 02 December 2006 at 3:06am
This forum is the place to come for honest unbiased feedback on your tracks, prior to full release.  Please read the following to get the most out of the feedback you get on your songs:

It is encouraged that your post links to your new songs or Works In Progress here rather than the New MP3s forum if you aren't entirely sure that they are finished, or if you think they can be improved upon but you're not sure how.  You may post links to full tracks, short clips of tracks, or even just ideas that you've recorded, like a vocal or a chord progression.

What you can expect when posting a track here:
  • Most certainly: honest and unbiased feedback. Thats's what this forum is for.  No hand-holding, clique-forming or back-scratching is allowed!  Members may give useful reviews on all aspects of your new song.  Anything from the song content and arrangement through to recording quality.  Don't take what people say as a given; it is merely their opinion, but everyone's opinion is valuable.  If many people agree on the same thing, then it is probably the case.
  • Don't take exception to what anyone says.  If you receive comments from someone you don't know, you may choose to weigh the comments up against that person's own songwriting and production capabilites by checking out their own songs.  You will probably value that person's opinion more if you respect their own work.  Above all else, it is important that anyone may post their opinions or review without fear of reprisal.  If you don't agree with someone's opinion, just ignore it.  One bad opinion isn't the end of the world.
  • Don't expect ratings or nominations on your song.  Members may give still them if they feel the song really warrants it, but this forum is the place to post if you feel the song isn't quite ready, and people will tell you if they think it is.  It is not the place for hollow praise.  If your track can be improved upon, it is surely better to refine it before you release it properly, so it can achieve a higher chart position.
  • If there are any specific areas in which you'd like feedback, its a good idea if you mention them.  For instance, if the track is fully constructed but you aren't sure if its mastered properly, request feedback on that point.  Or if you're not sure if the vocals are loud enough, ask for comments on that.

Conventions to pay attention to when replying to someone's post:
  • When artists/bands post their new or unfinished works in this forum they are only after honest views.  There is no need to just post to tell a friend that their track is great.  Its probably best save that praise for when they post the track in the New MP3s section.  Instead you are encouraged to tell them where you think there is room for improvement, no matter how small.  You don't need to be harsh, but you are encouraged to be fair.
  • If the track is labelled as a Work In Progress (or WIP), or linked from this forum, it probably not a good idea to rate or nominate the track unless you feel it is beyond improvement.  Otherwise, that track may end up in the chart before it is ready and the artist/band may miss a chance at greater chart glory.

You are welcome to post your views below

These all sound like good points to me - thank you for putting this together.

I must admit I put my comments on a song page rather than on here, so I'll change that in the future - though at least comments can always be deleted when you feel the track is ready or you can hide comments if you'd rather not have the unvarnished truth displayed to the world, or if you're worried about the herd mentality creeping in

Okay, I've taken out that bit.   You can put feedback wherever you like.   As you say comments can be deleted, so its up to each individual how to handle it.  I'm not trying to lay down any unneccessary rules.

The main objective of these guidelines is to make sure no one gets offended and that the information remains unbiased and factual.  Where exactly you post the feedback is actually irrelevant.

Ah, what a great post.
If it wasn't for Management3 , I wouldn't even know what half the message board was for.

Thanks ever so much.

I ususally hold off putting anything on this or any public site till I think it is finished.  Then I get some helpful comments, I realize how much I need to learn, then I change it.  I'm still embarassed to let anyone hear me in the beginning stages of production .

Maybe this should be in the confessional section but I'm holding off on the VIP membership until I know where I'm getting money for house payments so I only have 3 spots available.

Question:  Is there any acceptable way to request feedback on a song not listed on a website?  My on-line IQ is about 75 but I think I can manage emailing a MP3.

You might have to make do with rotating your mp3s until you can get a VIP.

I just had a random idea cus of this thread.. would it be possible to have it so that when you tick not to receive comments / nominations on tracks you wanna put up here you can receive comments but they're all anonymous and only you can read them?

That might encourage people to be a bit harsher, sometimes you do get the feeling like people are just being nice for the sake of it..
