In the heady post-Monkeys climate the Sheffield music scene in 2006 has never been better and local bands are being thrown headlong into the spotlight for some long overdue attention. The city has harvested a clutch of exiting new bands over the last year and amongst these are The Spires, a five-piece electro pop outfit with an artillery of smart, sharp anthemic dancefloor-filling tunes. You can hear smatterings of The Strokes, The Bravery and Doves in early recordings but mercifully The Spires' music is not glued with rigid adherence to the guidlines on contemporary indie-pop. It slides between the swirling euphoria of 'Follow I fall', the frenetic guitar-fuzz of 'If I Die Tomorrow', the pounding bass-lines and ear-splitting drum-rolls of 'Death and Taxes' and the woozy psychedelic keyboard lines of 'Honestly'. The live performance is where the energy and enthusiasm of the band is captured in its true glory. Singer Matt Smith covers every floorboard on stage as he tears into the set, leaving each gig suitably sweat-drenched and ho....-voiced. Apart from the tunes the immediate appeal of the lads is they're a sharp witted, affable and instantly likeable band. It's hard not to sound cliched but it really is about the music with this bunch. Catch them playing in and around sheffield this year whilst they're still a well kept secret.
