POETREE began in February 1999 as a collective of artists, actors, poets, emcees and singers who were concerned with a cloud of negativity, exploitation, and redundant rhetoric that plagued each of our respective art forms. Inspired by our motto: "Teach, Reign, Entertain and Prosper", POETREE set out to uplift knowledge before the dollar. Our message has reached all types of audiences, from the open mics, to the theater, to the schools, to the studio, and most importantly to the people. The group of four artists (Phenom - MC, Brother Mike - Poet, Isa Starr - MC / Vocalist & Rhythm - Poet) not only want to make music that entertains people without undermining them, but also seeks to put music back into the community’s hands. We removed the days of waiting on promoters, magazines and industry heads to tell us what they think we want (thus repeating the formula). The group has continued to work throughout the Chicago community and the country. We have performed with some of the greatest artists in music such as Common, Mos Def, Amel Larrieux, Sonia Sanchez, Talib Kweli, N'Dami, Cee-Lo, The Roots, Roy Ayers, Erykah Badu, Dead Prez, KRS One, Big Dady Kane, and Floetry. POETREE’s release our first (independently-produced) album entitled "Positive Pollution" April 2004 which sold out of local stores in 5 months. They were also rewarded a position in the Illinois Arts Council traveling Roster for their Artistic Expression Workshop which targets at risk youth. The workshop teaches youth to implement hip-hop culture and African empowerment as a means of violence prevention and knowledge of self and history. POETREE wants to spark the revolution with their Positive Pollution.
