With 8 recordings on the Blue Note, Soul Note, JSL and Zoho Music labels, Judi Silvano has led multiple groups from a vocal group on her first CD "Dancing Voices" to a duo with legendary pianist Mal Waldron on “Riding A Zephyr”, an all-star little big band of standards on "Let Yourself Go" to a quartet on “Women’s Work” featuring songs by American women, played by women. Silvano has won grants from Meet the Composer & New York State Council on the Arts (twice), has been named a Top-10 vocalist in Down Beat Polls (4 times) and has had articles published in All About Jazz, Jazz Improv Magazine & the book "Advice From The Masters". Ms. Silvano has been the subject of the original composition "Sketches for Silvano" by contemporary classical composer Lori Dobbins and Kenny Werner’s “No Beginnings, No Endings” (commissioned by the MIT Wind Ensemble and premiered in 2007) was written for Ms. Silvano along with Joe Lovano.
Silvano has been featured at festivals and concert halls around the globe in Montreal, Paris, London, Verona, Perugia, Istanbul, North Sea, Tel Aviv, Helsinki and New York’s Caramoor & JVC Jazz Festivals in programs from originals & improvised compositions to big band. Silvano grew up in the culturally-rich Philadelphia and shares a life of music with the celebrated saxophonist and Cleveland native Joe Lovano, whom she met at jam sessions in New York City in the early 1980’s. Together they founded JSL Records and have released many jazz and creative music CD’s and DVD’s plus music for healing meditation. "Sound Garden ~ Spirit Music" is a calm and peaceful collaboration with Joe on gongs and woodwinds and Judi on flutes and percussion, while "Sound Garden ~ Celestial Voices" features Judi's arrangements with her a'capella vocal ensemble of women’s voices. As an educator, Judi Silvano has taught voice at Rutgers University, Dutchess Community College and Newburgh Performing Arts Academy, led Master classes at Vassar College, Muhlenberg College, Manhattan School of Music, University of Northern Colorado and leads vocal improvisation workshops internationally. She also works with poets, writes dance scores and presents interactive multi-media events with her group "Voices Together" featuring vocalists, dancers and percussion.
