Bad news I'm afraid. Looks like I'm going to be out of the loop for a
good while, at least in the evenings. I can still get on during the day
at work.
I've managed to get a Trojan Horse Dropper.Small virus on my 'putor,
and from what I've read about it it's one of the hardest known viruses
to remove. Some users have thus far found it impossible.
The rogue file is some sort of advertising trojan that is very badly
designed, but very destructive. AVG detects it with a warning, and
moves it to the vault. I've obviously disabled my system restore
function.....but it has come back again today despite everything.
Further research on my part revealed that it apparently has a memory
resident payload, so even if I format my hard drive, the thing resides
in memory and will return upon re-installation of the OS.
Seems that the only way to get rid of it for sure is to perform a low
level format - which takes around five hours, switch off the PC,
physically take out the memory for five minutes to 'starve' the virus,
then unconditionally format the hard drive, and re-install XP.
To make matters worse I've just discovered that my copy of XP is physically damaged There's a bloody big mark or scratch on it.
I made a backup of it (which I believe I am legally entitled to do) but
I can't actually remember where I put the damned thing...so I'll have
to turn my flat upside down searching for it. If I can't find it I'll
have to go back to Windows 98
I can still get an internet connection for now, but I expect to lose it
soon. Already things are slowing down terribly (this is one of the main
symptoms of the virus, many users are utterly unable to access the net
once it has begun it's work'. I just hope that no damage is done to any
of my files.
If you are reading this Stu, I know that you are expecting a JPG
graphic from me for the banner offer. Obviously this must now wait
'till I'm up and running again. However if you cannot wait, I will
fully understand if you want to give the slot to someone else.
I feel doubly guilty as I am supposed to be doing the December
'Ffabbia's Recommended' list, and checking out some new material fom
various people. All this will now have to wait.
Yours miserably : Ffabbia

That's freakin horrible. I hope the best as well. Low-level format? I hope that means very little file loss

Hold off before you wipe your system.
If you have access to another pc use it to research the virus. I will check the net for solutions and post anything relevant I find.
Hang in there buddy.

Yep, don't wipe just yet. Most of these things are fixable.
Hope you're back sooner than soon
