the sounds themselves are impressive... the actual riffs themselves are samples for sure... you'll notice that the notes he hits on the keyboard are not even in the same key signature as others... so the samples of different riffs are assigned to different zones on the keyboard... not hard to do really... i have a roland s-750 sampler that you can assign voicings like that to differnt areas of the board... like for 2 octaves it will be straight notes allowing you to play chords and chunk along... then the next octave will be differnt ready-made riff runs just hit a key and it plays the passage... certain keys have a feedback note assigned to them.. certain keys have an out-of-phase tone assigned to them..
can do the same thing with vocal patches... primarily used for jazz scat stuff... pre recorded samples of scat phrases assigned to differnt keys... |

Its samples for kontakt (a software sampler). You could trigger exactly the same sounds from a drum pad if you wanted, but you could only play the riffs that are loaded into it.

I disagree Joseph, soon we will be able to play any instrument from our guitars ;). I can't wait for electric violin! Sax will be fun too.

You can already do that Kelly, all you need is a midi pickup which transmits the signal through a VST engine simlar to that of the keyboard above. You can make is sound like anything - even human voice, once it's VST triggered samples. Still though, you will always have musicans who want to physicaly play their instruments - there is a certain sense of satisfaction and transfer of feeling that you can only get when your body (fingers, voice etc) is generating the music rather than just your mind. Some of the VST sample libraries out there are amazing (choirs, orchestras, human voice, you name it).
