A little Rakkrant imminent - pay attention.

In my humble and modest opinion I feel I ought to say something regarding voting and commenting.

Although it is absolutely wonderful to received uber-positive reviews/comments/ 10outof10 votes for your songs, surely it's a better thing if the top end of the comments and vote scale is reserved for music which warrants such praise?

Having spent a few weeks now checking out tracks as they arrive, and also delving a little deeper into some artists discographies and passing constructive comments and votes of my own,  it became obvious that there is a little "hand-holding" going on with 10 votes a-plenty.  This is not the best way to encourage better tracks from artists.

Isn't it more preferable to be given a 10/10 very rarely, and only if the track can be defined as "the best thing ever in the world and nothing I have heard is gonna beat this"?

Perhaps we all need to chill a little with the voting and give sensible votes plus a comment or two to encourage/advise/emote the artist to try harder, change somthing or re-arrange etc.  I would like to politely propose that we all follow a simple guide to voting/commenting using the scale below:

  • 10 = PERFECT - CAN'T FAULT IT - I BOW TO YOUR BRILLIANCE - I COULD NEVER WRITE A TRACK LIKE YOURS EVER - YOU ARE A GOD (VERY RARE)
  • 9 = I would happily buy this track and play it many times over but there are a handful better songs out there with a 10 vote
  • 8 = Well worth a second visit and easily stands out above the crowd
  • 7 = Sounding good but could improve with just a teensy bit of extra "pre-upload" effort in the specified areas in my comments
  • 6 = It's a good start - maybe a work in progress - but misses a hook/melody/arrangement/decent mix/purpose
  • 5 and below - make your own comments directly as you should do.

Too many 10 votes send the charts crazy and make them pointless.

Everybody please feel free to contribute to the list with sensible suggestions and take time out to really consider what I have suggested here.....or even flame me for being a crap artist but please! DONT HAND-HOLD ANYBODY- it's entirely pointless and dilutes the impact and recognition due to an artist that deserves and gets a sensible rating of 8, 9 or 10.

Come on guys n girls - we are all very good at encouraging eachother - I know i was very happy to start getting comments and it motivated me to try harder too - I mean this sincerely so please don't give me any backlash cool speak.

RakkRant(TM) over.

You can sl*g my tunes off here:

I've been trying to get this across since day one, but here, as everywhere else, people regard anything less than a 9 as a negative vote.

6 is a decent vote!!!!! If someone votes an 8, that means they think your track is great!

Only 10's I give out are for stuff which I would immediately go down the record store and buy.

I do agree with you. The problem as I see it today is...Back when the site started someone with an 8 vote would be in the charts. Now you have to have a 9.5 voted 80 times to be in the top 50. It's still better than Sooondcleek.

What if we start from zero to balance the chart business out?

I am guilty of giving a high vote now because when I hear something I want others to hear ( not just the forum members ) I have to give it a ten other wise it is buried in the pack. Therefore I don't vote as often as I used to. I just leave comments.

How about a simple 'I'd buy it'-type button?  You can only buy it once, and the rankings are based on how many people voted to buy it in the last week.  That way, tracks will drop out of the chart unless they are getting constantly voted up, just like the real charts.  More of a sales, rather than ongoing popularity chart.

Stew, wasn't there word of a new ranking system coming along a while back?
